Serving Larchmont Village, Hancock Park, and the Greater Wilshire neighborhoods of Los Angeles since 2011.

Music Experience: Grouplove at the El Rey Theater

El Rey Theater Hosts Grouplove on October 26, 2011

One of our goals in developing LarchmontBuzz is to make sure our neighborhood music lovers take advantage of all the great music venues that are within a few minutes drive of home. Living in the Hancock Park/Larchmont Village area is quite possibly the optimal location for all things musical in Los Angeles! Everything is within 10 minutes of where we live…so why not experiment a little?  If you don’t like the band, you can be home in bed, just like any other night, quicker than a commercial break on any of the cable TV channels!

The El Rey Theater has given us a strong reason to post about their upcoming events. This week, tickets for a band called Grouplove went on sale through AEG/Ticketmaster for their October 26th appearance.  Grouplove is an alternative band with roots in Los Angeles. We first discovered them when they opened for Florence+The Machine on their three night visit at the Wiltern last Fall.  Grouplove was stellar – a big, fresh, fun sound anchored by true harmonies and energized percussion.   The band is actually an eclectic bunch – 5 members with 2 from New York, 1 from London and 2 from LA.  And they all met on the Island of Crete in Greece.  Since last Fall’s Wiltern gig, the band played Chicago’s Lollapalooza music event, was recognized as one of NME Magazine’s Top 10 Best New Bands of 2010 and is about to release their debut album called “Never Trust a Happy Song”.

Here’s a little neighborhood tidbit…Grouplove drummer Ryan Rabin is a Loyola High School graduate!  His dad, Trevor Rabin, wrote a favorite song – “Owner of a Lonely Heart” – as lead guitarist/vocalist for the rock group Yes.  Son Ryan’s success is all his own – having been a working drummer since his mid-teens.

If you like alternative music in the same genre as Foster the People, The Drums and Fanfarlo then check out Grouplove at the El Rey Theater.  Tickets are $17 GA – General Admission – standing room only.   Standing room is a great way to see a band with this much energy!  Hurry – tickets will sell out quickly.
