Do The Jerk!: An Evening of Scopitones Music Video Jukebox Films on 16mm

January 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us as artist, animator, musician, and film collector Martha Colburn presents a rare compilation screening, culled from her impressive collection of 16mm “Scopitones”! The precursor to modern music videos, Scopitones were short musical films – featuring swingin’ artists of the day – which the hip cafe set could view (on film!) by dropping a couple coins in a “video” jukebox! These rare 1960s music films originated in France, but soon spread from Las Vegas to Quebec. Colburn’s private collection is made up of prints extracted directly from the ancient ‘Video Jukebox’ machines. The films range from Françoise HardyJohnny HallydayVince Taylor and France Gall – to Brook BentonCollette Magny, Les SurfsThe Kessler Twins and Barbara McNair.

Preceding the screening, Colburn will give a short presentation about the history of the Scopitones, the directors (who are unknown), the artists, and the mechanics of machines themselves.
