A fish — yes, a fish — narrates this phantasmagoric comedy of predestination while being butchered. Beautiful Montreal heiress and model Bibiane (Marie-Josée Croze) moves through life with ease until she gets drunk and fatally hits a Norwegian fisherman and later falls in love with his catch of a son. An early look at the preoccupations with morality and fate, this second feature curio sits at the cross between the works of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Krzysztof Kieślowski and would mark a turning point in the director’s career. For any who may find offense in its material, the film opens with the mea culpa: “We apologize to all our Norwegian friends.”
