Film: The Legend of Mexman

April 25 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

“Documentary filmmaking at its best, full of smart and beautiful visual poetry.”

THE LEGEND OF MEXMAN (2023, 89 min., dir. Josh Polon).

A truly compelling and often heartbreaking portrait of the cost of achieving your artistic vision, mentally and emotionally, THE LEGEND OF MEXMAN focuses on a former USC Film School student, Germán Alonso, who attracts attention for his ambitious sci-fi / fantasy shorts, often incorporating meticulous stop-motion animation. Veteran film producer Moctesuma Esparza offers Alonso the opportunity to direct his first feature film, the fantastical sci-fi epic MexMan – and what follows is a saga of unrequited love, the highs and very lows of making movies, and an artist who may have too much creativity for his own good.

Discussion following with Germán Alonso (participant), Jonathan Sims (participant), Connie Morlett Madison (advisor) and Josh Polon (director/producer), moderated by FOUND Magazine founder, Emmy-winning documentarian and “This American Life” contributor Davy Rothbart.

“Guillermo del Toro with a strong shot of Bruce Lee mixed in.” — Ross McElwee, SHERMAN’S MARCH

“A fascinating portrait of the Artist become Hero.” — Jay Duplass, WILD WILD COUNTRY

“Documentary filmmaking at its best, full of smart and beautiful visual poetry.” — Mohamed El Manasterly, THE SQUARE

“The Legend of MexMan has all the deep-cut betrayals of THE SOCIAL NETWORK with the high-stakes behind-the-scenes of HEARTS OF DARKNESS, but on a scale so small it reminds you just how massive human emotions are.” — Paste Magazine

Ticket Price: $15 (in-person event only)
