THE WOODWARDS PRESENT

This majestic legacy property enthroned on the premiere street in Hancock Park presents an English Manor trophy residence with tennis court designed by respected architect Roland E. Coate, considered one of the finest residential architects in the history of Southern California.

Impressive architectural statements include a steeply gabled roofline, towering chimneys and decorative half-timbering, which echo hallmarks seen at the grandest homes in England and abroad. Lofty ceiling heights join intricately carved doors and masterful use of paneled walls in primary rooms and hallways. An Oriel window over the stone-arched doorway adds to the authenticity of Coates’ Tudor design in the beautiful two-story entry Hall. Embellished ceilings in main rooms use timber or thickly layered craftwork to draw the eye upward and enrich the space. The 21 rooms include: library, dining, conservatory sunroom, dual powder rooms, owners’ suite, office, and a guest apartment. A park-like back yard is overlooked by a huge veranda accessed from all public rooms and inviting major outdoor entertaining. To the manor born…

Builing in 1929 for Gertrude K. and Gerald C. Young, Coate was give what was then considered an enormous budget of $100,000 to create a thirty-two room Tudor mansion. He used only the finest materials, including mullioned windows, cut stone, brick, heavy timbering, and slate roofing, according to Architectural Digest, which featured the home in 1931. Coate designed numerous important residences and buildings, three of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including All Saint’s Church and the Irene and David O. Selznick residence in Beverly Hills. He also designed estates for movie moguls George Cukor, Jack Warner, and Parley Johnson.

Considered one of the most important architectural residences in Hancock Park, 101 North Hudson features a formal English garden designed by noted landscape designer A.E. Hanson, which remains on the grounds. Hanson also designed the garden at Getty House, the official residence of the Mayor of Los Angeles. The championship tennis court was designed for Gerald Young, who was the first champion of the Los Angeles Junior Tennis Tournament in 1903 and served as the president of the Southern California Tennis Association, (a forerunner of the USTA) from 1932-1954.
