Greater Wilshire Area Homeless Count Postponed Until February 24

On Thursday, we reported that the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council has been busy organizing its annual homeless count, scheduled to take place on January 27.  Yesterday, however, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority announced that neighborhood homeless counts around the city are now being postponed for a month, due to the current COVID-19 surge.  According to the GWNC’s interim homeless liaison, Max Kirkham, who is organizing the local GWNC event, the new date for the the count in our area will be February 24, along with other communities in LAHSA’s Service Planning Area 4.  Hope Lutheran Church, originally booked to host the January 27 event will still serve as the gathering place for volunteers on February 24.

“The Homeless Count is how the City and County of Los Angeles gain a more accurate picture of the state of homelessness and helps ensure that city and county services are funded and directed where they are most needed,” Kirkham said, noting that GWNC still needs another 26 volunteers to sign up for the all-volunteer counting activity on February 24.  Also, Kirkham said, “Anyone who signed up to volunteer before the date change should check their email for a message from the Homeless Count asking them the reconfirm for the new date/time.”

All volunteers must be 18 or older, and show proof of COVID vaccination.  The counting activity will be done completely from cars this year, to maintain distance and safety for everyone involved.
