Calling All Cooks

Calling all cooks!  Cookbook season has arrived and it’s a pleasure perusing all the beautiful new cookbooks.

A stunning new Ottolenghi cookbook is called “Jerusalem” because he wrote it with his business partner, Sami Tamimi, and both are natives of that city, though Ottolenghi is an Israeli Jew, and Tamimi a Palestinian Muslim.  For once the Arabs and Jews have come together and the result is spectacular.

Ottolenghi has said of his food, “We sell with the eyes as much as the tongue.”

I’ve made many recipes from his vegetarian cookbook, “Plenty”, and not only are they delicious, but a joy to behold.  Just come by to see the new book (not vegetarian) and you’ll be transported to Jerusalem.  Trust me, if you can read, or be read to, you can make these recipes.  A scale would be handy, though.

And then there’s the new Malouf cookbook, Malouf: “New Middle Eastern Food.” More doable Middle Eastern recipes, if you can drag yourself away from looking at all the wonderful photos in the cookbook.

And more – the new Canal House cookbook, “Canal House Cooks Everyday”, by Hamilton and Hirsheimer, is a compendium of seasonal recipes, some so simple yet brilliant you can’t believe you hadn’t thought of them yourself.

Their writing makes you want to cook and share the bounty with friends.

The new Ina Garten!!  It’s called “Barefoot Contessa Foolproof”  and like all of Ina Garten’s cookbooks, the recipes are fabulously foolproof.  This book is for novices and gourmet cooks alike.  Her roast turkey would be perfect for a simple and delicious Thanksgiving dinner.

Bakers delight.  Thomas Keller’s “Bouchon Bakery cookbook has arrived.

Perhaps not for the novice baker – sophisticated, with Keller’s attention to technique, detail and exquisite results.
