Chevalier’s Books Reproductive Rights Book Drive

Syan Lunsford of Chevalier’s Books organized an abortion rights book drive to raise funds for organizations helping women.

Chevalier’s Books is taking action to help support reproductive rights in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, reversing the opinion that had established  a woman’s right to an abortion. Shortly after the decision was announced, Chevalier’s sent an email to clients announcing the drive, including links to bundles of abortion rights books. The drive was also announced on social media.

“Our team at Chevalier’s has been deeply affected by the Supreme Court’s unjust decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. To encourage support for those seeking abortions, 15% of the sales of titles related to abortion, reproductive justice, & sexual health will be directly donated to grassroots abortion funds. Funds will be split evenly between Oklahoma Roe Fund, Kentucky Health Justice Network, New Orleans Abortion Fund, Justice Empowerment Network South Dakota, & Fund Texas Choice.”

Syan Lunsford, Chevalier’s Books event coordinator, told the Buzz that support for the drive has been good and is raising awareness among customers of both the issue and what people can do to support abortion rights. Earlier this month, the drive was featured in a story in the Orange County Register.

Store manager Katie Orphan told the Register, “It’s a long-held tradition in our industry. Not every bookstore necessarily takes a more activist stance – I have certainly known a number of bookstore owners who aim for neutrality, which is a stance in itself – but we also think about one of the best-known booksellers of the 20th century, Sylvia Beach, who owned Shakespeare and Company in Paris, and published ‘Ulysses’ when nobody else would.”
