Yesterday, the Los Angeles City Council made a series of fairly minor tweaks to the City Council redistricting map it introduced last week, and approved the final product, which will now be presented to the public for comment at two special meetings on November 10 (today) and 23. A vote to accept the final map is scheduled for December 1.
A detailed, zoomable version of the map as approved yesterday is now available…and as with the Council’s first version of the map approved last week, this one splits our local Greater Wilshire area between Council Districts 5 and 13, with the east/west dividing line between Rossmore Ave. and Arden Blvd.
Both sides of Rossmore and the area west of that is in CD 5 (purple area in the map below), and both sides of Arden and the areas to the east are in CD 13 (yellow area below). Also, all GWNC neighborhoods south of Wilshire, from La Brea to Western, are in CD5, as shown below. And the Melrose neighborhood, in the upper NW corner of the GWNC area, is also in CD 13, as shown below
During the amendments section of yesterday’s meeting, there were three changes proposed for the general Greater Wilshire area – one to effectively move both sides of Arden from CD 5 into CD 13 (which was passed and is represented on the map above), one to effectively move both sides of Melrose Ave., from La Brea to Wilcox, from CD 13 into CD 5 (also approved and represented on the map above), and one to move an area from the west side of Western to the alley west of Western, from Beverly to Maplewood, from CD 10 to CD 13…but that motion was withdrawn before any votes were taken.
Prior to yesterday’s meeting, there was also a suggestion sent from the Windsor Square Association to move the “south of Wilshire” / “east of Muirfield” neighborhoods of the GWNC into CD 13,” to keep more of the Park Mile section of Wilshire Blvd. (which runs from Highland to Wilton) together in one district. But there were also comments sent from representatives of the Fremont Place and Wilshire Park neighborhoods, which would have been involved in that move, saying their areas do not officially support the adjustment, so no formal motions were made by any City Council members.
Also, CD 8 Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson introduced a motion requesting that the Exposition Park area, a political football which has been tossed back and forth between CD 8 and 9 at various points during the redistricting process, be moved back into CD 8 (from which it was officially removed during the 2012 redistricting process)…but that motion was defeated in a later vote.
The first of the two public hearings on the Council’s approved draft map, which are agendized as Special Meetings of the City Council, will be held today, starting at 12 p.m. Like all Council meetings, the meeting will be broadcast on local cable channel 35, and will also be available on YouTube, via a link from the Council’s calendar page. Members of the public are welcome to call in to the meeting with comments (instructions are provided on the meeting agenda, and will be provided live during the meeting), or to submit written comments via an easy-to-use form on the Council File page for the redistricting issue.
