City Offers Free Recycled Water for Trees, Lawns & Gardens

The City of Los Angeles now invites LADWP customers to visit its Recycled Water Filling Stations to pick up up to 300 gallons of recycled water for landscape, garden and tree watering. (Photo from LADWP.)

The continuing severe drought and tightening watering restrictions have left many Los Angeles residents eager to help but also afraid they may lose at least some of their beneficial trees, gardens and other landscaping.  One thing that can help is the city’s Residential Water Fill Station Program, which provides up to 300 gallons of water per week – for free – to LADWP customers.  The water is exclusively for landscaping use, including trees, gardens, and lawns.

To get the free water, bring your own water containers, with water-tight lids, to one of the city’s two Residential Recycled Water Fill Stations:

Los Angeles-Glendale (LAG) Water Reclamation Plant
4600 Colorado Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90039
Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
(Not including holidays or rainy days)

Los Angeles Zoo Parking Lot
5333 Zoo Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Mondays 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
(Not including holidays or rainy days; will also be open on Tuesdays after Monday holidays)

According to the city, “Recycled water helps promote conservation by offsetting demand for precious drinking water. Customers may use recycled water only for landscaping purposes, such as maintaining trees, shrubs, gardens, and lawns, and to water edible fruits, vegetables, and herbs. All edible items must be washed with drinking water before consumption.”

To qualify for the program, you must:

  • Be an LADWP customer. (Bring an LADWP bill and a government issued ID for verification.)
  • Take the Recycled Water Fill Station training provided by the LADWP.
    • Training is free and will be conducted on-site at the fill station.
    • Please RSVP by email at [email protected].
  • Submit a signed Recycled Water User Application and Agreement Form.
  • Place the LADWP-provided “Do Not Drink” purple stickers on ALL containers used for transporting recycled water.
  • Bring your own water-tight lid containers to the fill station. (All containers will be checked for proper labeling.)
  • Carry and maneuver your containers. (LADWP personnel will not help load or carry any containers.)
  • Bring your own water-tight lid container(s) to the fill station. For container suggestions, see the List of Water-Tight Lid Containers. (Tie-down straps to secure the containers are also recommended for your safety.) Note that, for a limited time, LADWP will give away a limited number of two-gallon containers to customers picking up recycled water, while supplies last.

Finally, the city cautions participants to “plan accordingly when determining how much water to pick up and keep in mind the size of your vehicle when selecting transport containers. Ensure your vehicle can handle the amount and weight of recycled water you collect and transport. Driving a vehicle with heavy, sloshing liquid decreases vehicle stability and requires longer stopping distance.”

Participants will be allowed to pick up a maximum of 300 gallons of recycled water, free of charge, per visit.
