Correct Tree Pruning

These Crepe Myrtle trees in Larchmont Village were topped, a harsh pruning that can jeopardize the health of a tree.

It’s the time of year when we see lots of neighborhood trees being pruned because it’s easier to see the structure of a tree when the leaves are gone. As we have preveiously reported, trees are a vital part of our urban neighborhoods and should be cared for, but often they are seriously harmed with bad pruning practices.  Unfortunately, we see lots of trees being trimmed improperly. If you are thinking about having your trees pruned, it’s a good time to make sure you trust that pruning to a qualified tree trimmer.

Tree People, a non-profit that inspires people to plant and care for trees, warns that topping, heading, tipping or rounding-over all refer to the practice of cutting off branches or trunks without consideration, leaving stubs where branches once grew.

Tree experts advise against topping trees like this one.

According to Tree People, not only is this practice unsightly, but it seriously stresses the tree, putting it at risk for disease and pests shortening its life. While a healthy tree is beneficial, a tree weakened by topping becomes a liability. Weakened branches are more likely to fall and cause damage, for which the property owner may be liable.

Tree People advises neighbors that despite all of the facts pointing at the harmful effects of tree topping, many companies still rely on this method. To protect your trees, do your research. If a company advertises that they “top,” do not hire them. It means they don’t understand how to properly prune.

Here’s a video from Tree People on how to trim your trees.
