Coyote Sighted in Hancock Park

The coyote in this grainy photo by Geoffrey Wills was captured on video while wandering around the 100 block of McCadden Place.

Thanks to Buzz reader Geoffrey Wills for sharing this video of a coyote who seems to frequently visit the 100 block of McCadden Place in Hancock Park. In this short 8 second video the animal seems cautious and moving away from the  photographer.

We have shared many stories of coyote sightings in our neighborhoods over the last few years. These animals are part of our urban wildlife ecosystem. Their primary diet is rodents, mice and rats, which helps keep those populations in check. However, it’s important to remember that coyotes are very opportunistic and very smart, so it’s  up to us humans to protect our pets. LA Animal Services Wildlife Specialists Officer Lois Westphal advises residents not let pets out in the yard unattended, especially at dawn or dusk when coyotes are more likely to be out there feeding —  but they will be feeding at any time of the day, and there can be one or more coyotes.

LA Animal Services tracks coyotes, so you can report a sighting on 311 or reach out directly to your local shelter or by calling (888) 452-7381, and ask for an officer to create an activity report. You can find more information on the department’s website about how to safely coexist with our coyote neighbors.
