This summer we can enter the world of dance.
Dance gives our lives more flavor – more color – more beauty.
In these perilous times it helps us to soar.

Here are some of this summer’s offerings:

 

Summer 2022 Dance Events at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford:
Dudamel and Paris Opera Ballet at Hollywood Bowl, July 20 & 21.
LA Soundscapes: Nonosina at The Ford, August 14.
Desde México: Pacífico Dance Company 30th Anniversary at The Ford, September 10.

The Hollywood Bowl is presenting Gustavo Dudamel ,who is the Music and Artistic Director of the LA Phil and was recently appointed Music Director of the The Paris Opera.

Some of his new colleagues will be joining him for evenings of highlights from beautiful and memorable ballets danced by preeminent dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet.

Performing works by renowned choreographs including Rudolf Nureyev, William Forsythe and more, with the LA Phil conducted by Dudamel and solo keyboard by Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

The Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest amphitheaters in the world seating nearly 18,000. It has been the summer home of the LA Phil since it’s opening in 1922.

LA Soundscapes: Nonosina 
The Ford, Sunday, August14, at 10:30 a.m.
Two free kids tickets with every full-priced ($10) ticket for LA Soundscapes performances.
Founded by Estella “Nonosina” Reid, Nonosina celebrates and honors Polynesian arts through music and movement as both a dance company and school. Artistic Director Tiana Nonosina Liufau, granddaughter of Reid, has been featured on So You Think You Can Dance? and created choreography for Disney’s Moana. Join Nonosina in this opportunity to explore the music and dance of Polynesian cultures.

México: Pacifico Dance Company 30th Anniversary.
The Ford, Saturday, September 10 at 8:00 p.m. 
Pacífico Dance Company blends traditional folk dance and modern dance in an exploration and celebration of the cultural origins and stories of Mexico’s diverse regions and peoples. In Desde México, Pacífico presents two dance suites that illustrate a history shaped by the legacy of colonialism as it intertwined the cultural traditions of African, Mexican Amerindian and European settlers to Mexico. The evening also features the world premiere of A lo Norteño by Matthew de Leon.

The Ford is one of the oldest performing arts venues in Los Angeles with a 1,200 seat outdoor amphitheater. The Ford presents a summer season of music, dance, film and family events.

At the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at The Music Center, Gloria Kaufman presents Pacific Northwest Ballet with live music by Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra, Friday, July 13 -Sunday, July 17.

Under the direction of Peter Boal, Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies and ballet schools. Boundary-bending is the theme for this trio of daring and stunning performances. The program features Little mortal jump by resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, Plot Point by Crystal Pite set to Bernard Herrmann’s film score from Psycho and Waiting at the Station by Twyla Tharp set to a collection of composition by R&B artist Allen Toussaint.

There will also be a film festival known as “PNB Dance Film Festival” it will be free on the Jerry Moss Plaza to the public beginning July 13 and screened inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion’s Stern Grand Hall for performance ticket holders beginning on Opening Night Friday, July 15.

 


Backstage with the Buzz is written by Sheila Tepper, Producer Cultural Programming. Sheila has lived in the Larchmont area for fifty years, among her passions have been passing legislation for children with disabilities and interviewing outstanding artists appearing in the Los Angeles area.

There’s also a wonderful LA-based company performing this weekend (July 9 & 10) at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica — Barak Ballet, founded by LA native Melissa Barak. Three pieces by three talented choreographers to music by Maurice Ravel, Nils Frahm and Michael Nyman, including a world premiere by Melissa Barak.
