Just after we posted yesterday’s story about damage from the rain, another Buzz reader sent us a photo of a large tree that had fallen in Harold Henry Park in Windsor Village. It seems the rain-drenched soil was too much for another mature tree with some root rot. Arborist Nick Mook told us this tree, likely an Australian cheese wood – pittisporum undulatum (thanks to our reader for the identification) – like many older trees in the area, Â showed signed of wounding, over-irrigation and root damage.
This morning the play area at the park was closed off while crews from the LA Department of Recreation and Parks were cutting up the tree. The job was expected to take about two hours. The tree will be trucked to the department’s yard in Griffith Park, where it will be mulched and made available to residents as part of the city’s free mulch program. Hopefully plans will be underway to replace the tree at some point.
