Ebell Lecture and Lunch: Jock Peters, Modernist Architect of Bullocks Wilshire Interiors

A luncheon and lecture by Christopher Long, on the work of Modernist Jock Peters, architect of the iconic Bullocks Wilshire interiors, will be held on Wednesday, February 23 at the Ebell of Los Angeles.

Discover the fascinating career of early Los Angeles modernist architect Jock Peters with architectural writer Christopher Long, author of a new definitive book on Peters’s work. “Jock Peters, Architecture and Design: The Varieties of Modernism” is the first book to survey his incredible career.

Long will discuss the architect’s iconic interiors for Bullock’s Wilshire, his remarkable remarkable designs for influential developer William Lingenbrink, the short-lived Maddux Air Lines (eventually part of TWA), Desmond’s Department store, Irene (Lenz) Gibbons, the Hollywood film industry, and so much more.

Long’s visually rich study captures the varieties of modernism that define Peters’s work – including his film sets for Famous Lasky-Players (later Paramount Pictures) – under the legendary art director Hans Dreier, and includes never-before-published material from the architect’s personal archive, still in family hands. These remarkable images, alongside Professor Long’s insightful and lively narrative, demonstrate how Peters, despite his early death, managed to leave his mark on the modernist landscape in Southern California at a time when the new style was just emerging.

This lecture will present many never-before-seen photographs and drawings from the Peters family’s private collection which are featured in the book, which will be available for sale courtesy of Chevalier’s Books.

Eric Evavold, Los Angeles Architectural Tour Guide and Bullock’s Wilshire Ambassador will do a special introduction and moderate the Q&A.

A book signing will immediately follow the presentation.
