CD4 City Council Member David Ryu and CD7 Council Member Monica Rodriquez presented a proclamation to Ebell of Los Angeles President Ginger Barnard ,commemorating the 125th anniversary of the founding of the city’s oldest women’s club today at City Hall. Barnard was joined by leaders of the club including her executive board members Janna Bodek Harris, Madeline Murray, and Karlene Taylor. Former Ebell Presidents Kay Balue and Patti Hill were also in attendance, as were members Laurie Brown, Julie Stromberg, Mikki Brisk, Abbie Ghose, Liza Ameen, and Ebell General Manager Philip Miller.
“The Ebell was founded in 1894 when women had few educational opportunities,” explained Barnard in her remarks to City Council on the occasion of Women’s Suffrage Day at City Hall. “Our mission is to participate in and encourage the education, cultural and social growth of the diverse Los Angeles Community and to conserve and protect our historic Clubhouse, collections, grounds and the Wilshire Ebell Theatre.”
Barnard invited everyone to visit the club this Sunday from 3-5 pm for the free annual champagne open house to tour the building and learn more about membership, which she added is also open to men. The club is at 4400 Wilshire Blvd., at the corner of Lucerne and Wilshire in Windsor Village.
