El Cholo restaurant is one of those iconic LA eateries where everyone who lives here has likely been for a family dinner, a sports team celebration, an office party, etc. It’s also a go-to place for anyone who comes to visit and wants to sample old LA cuisine. Family owned and operated since 1923 by current owner Ron Salisbury’s grandparents Alejandro and Rosa Borquez, El Cholo deserved to be celebrated. this week the New York Times paid tribute to our beloved neighbor. The El Cholo family has always been an important part of our Larchmont community and we wanted to make sure you got a chance to read this wonderful story.
It’s not easy to make 100 years as a business, let alone a restaurant. We remember when there was a Sonora Cafe on La Brea, but we are glad to see they are thriving and look forward to many more dinners and their famous business-saving margaritas. Read on to learn more about why owner Ron Salisbury credits the drink for saving the restaurant and how the family finessed their traditional recipes to suit Angeleno’s tastes before we became such foodies.
