An Evening with Phillip Lopate and Gregory Pardlo at Chevalier’s Books

Please join Chevalier’s Books on Thursday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. as they host the celebrated essayist, poet, novelist, film critic and anthologist, Phillip Lopate, and the 2015 Pulitzer Prize Winner for Poetry, Gregory Pardlo.

Phillip Lopate was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1943, and received a BA from Columbia in 1964, and a doctorate from the Union Graduate School in 1979.  He has written four personal essay collections—Bachelorhood, Against Joie de Vivre, Portrait of My Body and Portrait Inside My Head ; two novels, Confessions of Summer and The Rug Merchant ; two poetry collections, The Eyes Don’t Always Want to Stay Open and The Daily Round; a memoir of his teaching experiences, Being With Children; a collection of his movie criticism, Totally Tenderly Tragically; an urbanist meditation, Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan; and a biographical monograph, Rudy Burckhardt: Photographer and Filmmaker.

He has edited five anthologies, including The Art of the Personal Essay, and, in addition, there is a Phillip Lopate reader, Getting Personal: Selected Writings.  His most recent books are Two Marriages (novellas), Notes on Sontag, At the End of the Day: Selected Poems, and To Show and To Tell: The Craft of Literary Nonfiction.  His essays, fiction, poetry, film and architectural criticism have appeared in many, many periodicals and anthologies.

He has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, a New York Public Library Center for Scholars and Writers Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts grants, and two New York Foundation for the Arts grants.

Phillip is currently a Professor of Writing at Columbia University, where he also directs the graduate nonfiction program.

Gregory Pardlo‘s collection Digest won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Digest was also shortlisted for the 2015 NAACP Image Award and was a finalist for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. His other honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts; his first collectionTotem was selected by Brenda Hillman for the APR/Honickman Prize in 2007.

Pardlo’s poems appear in The Nation, Ploughshares, Tin House, The Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry, Best American Poetry, and elsewhere.

Pardlo serves on the faculty of the M.F.A. program in creative writing at Rutgers University-Camden.  He lives with his family in Brooklyn.
