After 30 years, Hollyhock, purveyor of fine home furnishings, art and antiques, is closing at the end of the month. The announcement came from founder and owner and Windsor Square resident Suzanne Rheinstein in an e-mail this week to clients and friends.
“It’s hard to believe that Hollyhock is celebrating it’s 30th birthday this year. It has been a most rewarding adventure and it’s brought so much joy into my life and those of it’s devotees. It’s time for a new chapter in my life,” wrote Rheinstein.
In 1988, Hollyhock opened at 214 N Larchmont, in a light and airy space featuring tropical peach and green colored walls. It was stocked with elegant antiques as well as fanciful home accessories that celebrate gracious living. Rheinstein used the store like a “salon of sort to highlight all that is good and gracious in the world of design,” noted Architectural Digest.
Hollyhock also hosted book signings and special events for years on Larchmont, before moving over to West Hollywood to a larger space that could house both the store and Rheinstein’s thriving interior design practice. Many residents were deeply disappointed when the store left Larchmont, an early harbinger of the shift away from high quality, unique retail to a food-centric street crowded with coffee shops. A few years later, locals followed Rheinstein again to her latest location on La Cienega, which is now set to close at the end of February.
Rheinstein hosted a private celebration last night for friends and clients, who got a sneak peek at her farewell sale. Neighbors are invited to shop the sale starting today. Items $500 and over are marked down 30%, items under $500 are marked down 15%. No holds, no memos and all sales are final. Inquires are welcome.
