Knowles Karate Academy Raises Funds for Alexandria House

Participants in an introductory women’s self-defense class at Knowles Karate Academy this weekend, which doubles as an annual fundraiser for Alexandria House.

Michael Knowles, owner of Knowles Karate Academy at 4378  W. Third Street, reported to the Buzz this morning that the school’s annual fundraiser for Alexandria House, which takes the form of an introductory self-defense class for women, raised $450 yesterday for the local non-profit.  The funds will help women and children find safe, permanent shelter.  Knowles said a check will be presented at Alexandria House’s Tea & Tour event next weekend.

The fundraiser class, which also provides an introduction to the school’s longer, multi-week women’s self-defense class, is a tradition begun by Knowles he and his wife, Kathy,  opened the school opened in 2016.  The class teaches things like how to escape if you are grabbed, how to strike if you need to, using your voice to scream or demand to be left alone and, if necessary, how to escape an attacker who’s on top of you, then run away.
