LA County Keeps Counting Ballots

If you dropped your ballot in a ballot box yesterday, it could be one of thousands of ballots yet to tallied.

This story has been updated to include the estimate of ballotsĀ remaining to be counted.Ā

Late this afternoon, Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan released a preliminary estimate of more than Ā one million outstanding ballots left to be processed in the 2022 General Election.

According to the RR/CC, here’s how the preliminary estimate of Ā Vote by Mail ballots, Conditional Voter Registration ballots, and Provisional ballots returned on or before Election Day breaks out:

Vote by Mail ballots: 985,000
Conditional Voter Registration ballots: 21,000
Provisional ballots: 300

Vote by Mail ballots delivered by mail or dropped in person at a Ballot Drop Box or Vote Center are included in this estimate.

The RR/CC said it expected the number of outstanding Vote by Mail ballots to increase as they continue to accept ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received through Tuesday, November 15. These ballots additional ballots are not included in the preliminary estimate released today.

Even though Election Day is over LA County officials will keep counting ballots. For those of us who want to know the final results in our two local city council races, as well as the Mayoral race and others, we’re going to have to wait a few more days.

It takes more time to gather detailed precinct data on LA City races because voters can drop their ballots off at any vote center across the county, according to staff at the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC)’s office. The office told the Buzz this morning that staffers are focused on counting all the ballots across the county, as well as counting the ballots that arrive by mail within seven days of the election. Those ballots will be counted as long as they were postmarked on election day.

A Buzz reader told us she dropped off her ballot at a ballot box at one of our local libraries after deciding not to deal with the rain. When she checked Ballottrax.net, she learned her ballot hadn’t yet been counted. So maybe, if you did the same, your ballot is part of the thousands of ballots that RR/CC staff estimate remain to be counted. A detailed estimate of what remains may be released late this afternoon.

Not surprisingly, sone of the candidates, said they were going to wait until all the votes are counted before making a statements.

However, incumbent CD13 Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell told the Buzz,Ā ā€œServing the people of the 13th District is the highest honor, and I want to thank everyone who voted in this election. I also want to thank all our supporters and volunteers, who gave their time, energy, and resources to get me across the finish line. I am humbled and grateful, and I know that none of what weā€™ve achieved so far would be possible without you.”

“Weā€™ve known this race will be close, and there are still thousands of ballots to be counted. My team and I will be monitoring the count closely as more results come in over the coming days,” said O’Farrell. “My mission is to be of service. I will continue to tackle the issues our district faces to improve the lives of our residents, and above all else, put community over politics.ā€

Here’s where we are so far. As of 3:30 a.m., the county hadĀ processed and counted a total of 1,318,093 ballots, that’s 23.42% of registered voters casting ballots according to a release from Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan announcing semi-final results for the 2022 General Election. Ballots that have remain to be counted, includeĀ Vote by Mail ballots received on Election Day, provisional ballots, write-in ballots and damaged ballots. The county has 30-day period to certify the election.

Election results can be viewed at LAVOTE.GOV. So stay tuned, Ā the nextĀ post-Election Day ballot count update is scheduled for Friday, November 11.
