In celebration of Women’s History month, the non-profit storytelling organization Look What SHE Did! is hosting a free, virtual salon, open to the public, on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m., featuring stories of women that are not often told.
“It’s vitally important that we tell and archive stories of the many amazing women who have been left out of history books — for us and for our children,” Hancock Park resident Janna Bodek Harris told the Buzz. Driven by that belief, Harris has spent much of March helping Look What SHE Did! get the word out about its Women’s History Month events celebrating the courage and resilience of women.
Harris, who serves as Look What SHE Did! Board Vice President, said the organization kicked off the month and its fundraising campaign with a virtual event on March 7, featuring two films honoring labor activist and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Dolores Huerta, the legendary organizer and co-founder, with Cesar Chavez, of the United Farm Workers.
In the first film, high schooler Cat Oriel tells Huerta’s amazing story. The second film features the 90-year old Dolores Huerta herself, telling the story of the woman who inspired her to overcome her shyness and speak out — her Girl Scout leader.
Look What SHE Did! has released a new short film each week in March as its campaign drive continues. The initiative culminates with a free virtual event this Sunday afternoon, March 28, spotlighting films and interactive conversation with three Hollywood writer/producers:
- Sonay Hoffman on enslaved best-selling novelist Hannah Crafts
- Dee Johnson on Civil War surgeon / hero Mary Edwards Walker
- Brittany Ashley on courage/vulnerability researcher Brené Brown
The hour and fifteen-minute event will close with a live conversation with viewers about the power of women’s resilience in challenging times.
“We’re delighted to offer these wonderful stories and conversation with our community, free of charge, thanks to our generous sponsors,” said Longwood Highlands resident Julie Hébert, Founder of Look What SHE Did!
The nonprofit is only $5,000 away from its fundraising goal of $60,000 for the month. Sponsorships for the event start as low as $100 and come with an opportunity drawing for gifts. All are invited to join.
The mission of Look What SHE Did is to inspire women and girls to greatness by bringing to light stories of remarkable women who changed the world. The organization has produced more than 120 films, and recently allied with the National Women’s History Museum in Washington, D.C.
