Looking Back at 2022

2022 is almost in the books…and looking back at our coverage this year, we’re pleased to have been part of a number of important events in our community.

In our extensive election coverage, we reported on many of the H.O.D.G. “Looking Local” conversations with candidates running for our city, county and state offices, and then we covered nearly all the candidate forums before the general election.  We also played a leading role in the return of the Larchmont Family Fair and the installation of the new bistro lights on Larchmont Blvd. between Beverly Blvd. and First Street, both of which stemmed from our commitment to bringing the community together with information and action. (The bistro lights were born from the Larchmont 2021 Community Conversations, which we also helped convene and covered extensively in 2021.)

Reviewing both this year and the longer 11-year life of the Buzz so far, we hope you see what we see – an increasingly engaged community supporting a recovering Larchmont business district.   This year, we kept up our third year of weekly (and sometimes more than weekly) coverage of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and continued our detailed, second-to-none coverage of our Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council, and especially its Land Use Committee, which are our best link to local grass roots politics, and so often provide everyone’s first look at issues that will significantly affect our neighborhood.  In addition, we kept everyone up to date on our local neighborhood associations’ efforts to inform and engage their communities…and reported on a number of Larchmont Blvd. business comings and goings.  We like to think our coverage has helped our newest local businesses get off to a good start while we continue to support our long-time businesses.

This past year we also made a special effort to reach out to our local non-profit organizations to help showcase their work with news coverage and discounted advertising support.

And we know our readers continue to turn to the Buzz  for timely, local news, because we’ve been delighted to see the growth of our readers and followers on our website and social media. We now reach nearly 7,000 readers per week across our various platforms.  And when we promote local events, we get lots of interaction.  It’s great to know we’re serving a really important function in our community.

Finally, we deeply appreciate the contributions of our regular writers on specific topics:

…as well our 2022 guest writers Devon O’Brien, Rose Sarner, Abigail Byrne, Joanna Morley, Sky Bello, and Mia Gabriella, whose occasional stories added even more fresh perspectives to the Buzz on a variety topics.

In addition, we extend our thanks to the Windsor Square Hancock Park Historical Society, Bret Parsons and Eric Evavold for sharing their expertise on our local architectural heritage. And we enjoyed featuring local photographer Charlie Hess in his #eyesonlarchmont photo series. We are delighted to have such a busy hive of creative people, and we invite new voices to join us all the time. Maybe you?

As we look ahead to next year, we’re already working on the expanding placemaking efforts we’ve started on Larchmont. We’re excited to be working with the street’s property owners through the Larchmont Village Business Improvement District, and the street’s business owners through the Larchmont Boulevard Association (and we’re honored to be serving on the boards of both organizations). We’re also excited about working with both of our newly elected city council representatives, and their offices, as we all tackle the challenges of homelessness and public safety. You can expect to read more in 2023 about land use, housing, tenants’ rights, and efforts to support legacy small businesses, and more…mixed in with local news about people in the neighborhood and our amazing local architecture.

We’ll be taking a couple more days off this weekend, but will dive into buzzing about 2023 starting on Tuesday, January 3. Thanks for supporting the Buzz as a reader, a follower, a sponsor, and/or an advertiser – we couldn’t do any of what we do without YOU.

Happy New Year!
