Yesterday, several area organizations and municipal representatives sponsored the latest in an ongoing series of “Midtown Connect Day” events at Pan Pacific Park, helping match people experiencing homelessness with a variety of services and resources ranging from medical care to housing and more.
The event, billed as a “mini” Connect Day, was smaller than the Connect Day held last fall, but there were still about 10 service providers present (including the Saban Community Clinic, a veterans’ housing service, the LA Department of Social Services, the LA County Department of Mental Health, the LA Public Library and others). Tammy Rosato, the Homelessness Liaison for the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council, told the Buzz that 35 people were able to connect with these providers. Also, in addition to the on-site services, Rosato said the Saban Clinic arranged transportation for a few individuals to its facility nearby, where they were able to receive hot showers and medical attention.
“Once again I was deeply moved at how grateful every single individual was to enjoy breakfast, visit the various service providers conveniently located all in one place, followed by lunch and a snack to take with them,” Rosato said. “Many of the men also took advantage of the free haircuts, and all appreciated having access to a clean porta potty donated by CD4. As a greeter, I spoke to everyone. Men and women, young and old, appreciated the kindness of a conversation and feeling welcomed. Like the previous Midtown Connect Days, the day was peaceful without any incidents of any kind.”
This month’s event was sponsored by City Council Member David Ryu, County Supervisor Sheila Keuhl, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Assembly Member Richard Bloom, Senator Ben Allen, Midtown Homeless Coalition, Mid-City West Community Council, People Assisting the Homeles (PATH), the Center in Hollywood, and The People Concern. A date for the next Connect Day event has not yet been set.
Thank you, Tammy and Joy, for your amazing outreach and caring! Completely inspiring! Just great that some people could get to the Saban Community Clinic for medical care and hot shower.
