Volunteers from NGA Hancock Park are busy getting ready for the local charity’s annual fundraiser this Saturday evening at Wilshire Country Club.
“We are just doing our usual prepping, centerpiece building, auction set up, catalog printing, seating charts, etc., ” Kiel Fitzgerald told the Buzz. “But the Project Chairs have a new idea for NGA HP that we will set sail on after the Gala – its called, Good2Go BY NGA HP – move out care packages.”
Local homeless service experts helped NGA HP volunteers develop the idea to assist the social service agencies the charity supports by providing care packages that include sheets, towels, pillows, toiletries and other textile household necessities.
NGA traces its origins back to England in 1882 when volunteers sewed clothing for children. The Needlework Guild of America was formed in Philadelphia in 1885. The Hancock Park chapter is one of 33 chapters of the Needlework Guild of America that has been providing new clothing, linens and personal care items to less fortunate neighbors in Los Angeles since 1895.
“We can help individuals and families get a positive start as they transition from a shelter/supportive housing situation to making it on their own,” explained Fitzgerald. “We will prepare the care packages in advance and have them on hand to give out as needed.”
Each box will have an estimated value between $250-$500 and funds raised at this Saturday’s fundraiser will launch this new effort by NGA HP.
“So, in addition to providing all the clothing and linen requests we receive each month, we will now build GOOD2GO boxes by NGA HP and have them ready for all the residents of the 7 shelters as they transition out of care,” said Fitzgerald. “We are also looking to team up with Homeless College Freshman who need these boxes too.”
Proceeds from Saturday’s fundraiser support the NGA HP’s ongoing support of local social service agencies.
