On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Operation School Bell (OSB) was recognized by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education for its OSB on Wheels student clothing program. Operation School Bell is run by the Anne Banning Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Los Angeles (AL). OSB on Wheels partners with the Los Angeles Police Department, which was also honored.

Adrienne Seltzer, Operation School Bell on Wheels Chair and a La Brea-Hancock resident, accepted the award at the LAUSD board meeting, on behalf of OSB, and spoke of its mission to improve the lives of at-risk children in Los Angeles, enhancing their self-esteem and likelyhood to success.

“It was a wonderful day to be recognized for our work helping the underserved students in our community,” Seltzer told the Buzz later.

OSB on Wheels has a mobile unit that visited the various LAUSD districts 15 times this school year, clothing an average of 256 children each visit with 2 sets of uniforms, a jacket, backpack, pair of shoes, 5 pairs of socks and underwear, a hygiene kit and a book. This school year, OSB on Wheels clothed more than 4,200 K-5 students living in poverty, many of whom are homeless. The organization’s Hollywood facility, where children are brought in by their counselors, clothed 2,300 students this year.

Also on hand to accept the award were Assistant League CEO Melanie Merians, AL President Lisa Wierwille, and Anne Banning Co-Chair (with Kiel FitzGerald) Shelagh Callahan and LAPD Sergeant Luis Alvarado, with Officers Mannie Price and Kirk Madison.
