You may have noticed a new neon sign, just east of the Starbucks at the Original Farmers Market, at Third Street and Fairfax Avenue. The sign was designed and manufactured locally by designer Carol Newsom of Newsom Gonzalez, and constructed by Paul Stoaks of Signmakers in DTLA. The newest addition to the market was purposely styled to match the original Market advertising signage style from the 1930s and 40s, which was prevalent when the market opened in 1934.Â
The new sign has been in the works for almost three years, from design through the city approval process, and is part of the Market’s long-term construction plans to add space for some new grocery merchants, including Rick’s Produce Market, expected to open later this year, according to an Original Farmers Market spokesperson.
“The new sign is a very faithful addition, and kudos to the Farmers Market for making the effort to create something historically appropriate,” noted Eric Evavold, Hancock Park resident and neon sign enthusiast, who earned his neon credentials as a volunteer member of the board of the Museum of Neon Art for 18 years. “The sign is reminiscent of the 1920s neon signs that were built on those metal grids. They were very functional and [the grids] fade away once the sign is lit.”
Original Farmers Market Updates

Here’s a story we heard about Original Farmers Market’s The Dog Bakery, owned by Pet Rescue Advocate, Rocky Kanaka, who announced on Instagram that he will deliver free dog food to those in need (to apply, fill out the form at: RockyKanaka.com/FreeDogFood).
“We will get through this together if we find ways to support each other, love each other and fight for each other,” wrote Kanaka.
