Party like the Dickens as The Ebell of LA transforms into a Victorian drawing room for a spirited holiday soirée on Thursday, December 15, 2022.

The evening begins with  cocktails and a performance of “A Christmas Carol with Charles Dickens.” Actor David Melville of the Independent Shakespeare Company (producer of the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival) will perform his unique and charming characterization of Mr. Dickens himself, playing nearly every character in the story with musical accompaniment and dramatic interjections by actress Katy Tang.

In his lifetime, Charles Dickens was recognized not only as a great writer, but as an actor. His greatest successes on the stages of Britain and the United States were his solo performances of his own work. One of the first pieces he presented to great acclaim was “A Christmas Carol.”

In what has become a holiday tradition, Melville re-creates (with a little artistic license) the experience of a public reading given by Mr. Dickens himself, based on the novelist’s own adaptation.

“What’s unique about this is that performance is that you hear Dickens’ narrative as he wrote it rather than as a dramatization that leaves his voice out of it,” explained Melville. “It contains a surprising amount of humor and his attitude towards his characters is perhaps not as sentimental as you might think. But it’s always moving because it’s about an act of forgiveness and redemption.”

“The performance is full of the acting pyrotechnics Dickens was famous for as the two actors conjure a magical evening full of wry humor, ghosts, romance, and redemption,” wrote the Geffen Playhouse on its website.

Following the show, the music starts and the feast begins, with carols, dancing… and magic!

Dine sumptuously from The Ebell’s Dickensian buffet spread while music-master Michael Greenfield spins old holiday tunes and crowd favorites. Roving Magic Castle magician Tom Frank might just pull a rabbit from your silk top hat. To memorialize the evening, hop into the photo booth and grab some props–unless you come decked out in your own bonnets and bustles.

Bring your plus one, your besties, or just yourself. There will be something for everyone, and that includes outdoor cocktails and dinner for those who prefer an open-air setting. There’s no better way to celebrate the spirit of the holidays than with friends and loved ones at The Ebell.
