Police Activity in Area Keeps Skies and Sirens Busy

Crime in the neighborhood is heating up as the summer temperatures rise. With last night’s hovering helicopters over the north Larchmont/Hancock Park area, and continuous streams of sirens racing east to downtown as the LAPD responds to demonstrations over the George Zimmerman acquittal, the LA Times also reports that property crimes are up in Hancock Park.

The helicopters last night were related to the capture of a “large marauding band of young people who conducted a string of robberies, assaults and acts of vandalism” along Hollywood Boulevard around 9pm, according to a story in the LA Times. The group of perhaps 50 youths appeared to be organized and knocked down pedestrians and tourists in the Hollywood/Highland area demanding wallets and cell phones, grabbing purses and  in one case hauling off a cash register. The LAPD pursuit involved more than 110 officers with one arm of the dragnet ending up on Wilton Place near Lemon Grove and creating an hour of noise and commotion for local residents. Police captured a dozen of the suspects, most from South LA, but many more escaped.

Reports of increased property crime in Hancock Park was also reported by  LAPD Crime Mapping and the LA Times, noting the increase was “significant” at 14 property crimes in the past week, compared with the average of 7.8 crimes/week in the past three months. Most of the recent HP crimes were thefts from motor vehicles.

In the Larchmont Village area, an attempted break-in at a residence on the 500 block of North Irving on Tuesday morning was halted when a next-door-neighbor spotted a man trying to jump over a driveway gate and confronted him, causing the Hispanic male-female team, in their late 20s, to flee in a 4 door gold sedan. This incident reminds everyone to lock your doors and windows, be aware of any suspicious activity in your neighborhood and call 911 if you see something out of the ordinary.

    • I dearly wanted to join that ride, sadly injury prevented it. However I saw a big ride blow by my house escorted by LAPD Bicycle Police. That was a big thrill for me. I’ll be doing my own rides soon; )

  1. Last Saturday evening, July 13, all 5 residents of our home in the 400 North block of Las Palmas Avenue went to Larchmont for dinner between the hours of 6:50 and 9:30. We returned home in the dark, deactivated the alarm, and remained inside the rest of the evening.

The next morning an attempted break-in was discovered on the back side of the house at two pairs of French patio doors. Lucite panels and the screen doors were ruined beyond repair, but the intruder or intruders, did not gain entry. We surmise that they were surprised by our 2 large dogs, who the intruders apparently failed to notice, must have scared them off the property.

A police report has been filed and fingerprints were taken.

As an added precaution we plan to install 4 video cameras (real ones), as we are concerned the intruders may want to try again. Although not foolproof, the police said that videos are usually helpful to them.
