The Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission recently recommended Live Nation’s proposal to renovate and operate the Greek Theatre for the next decade. Live Nation has been competing against current Greek Theater manager/operator Neederlander Concerts for this coveted contract.

Larchmont Village based architecture/design firm Rios Clementi Hale is working with Live Nation on this bid to win the right to operate the Greek Theater. Last week, Rios Clementi Hale Principal Julie Smith-Clementi posted a sneak peek at what the Greek Theater might look like under the management of Live Nation.

From Smith-Clementi’s RCH blog post:

The decision affords our studios, as the architect and landscape architect for Live Nation’s team, the opportunity to restore the luster that was lost when a 1957 addition obscured many of the theater’s original Greek architectural details.

The commission’s decision is just the opening act of a long story that will unfold over the next few months. Its recommendation still needs the endorsement of the City Council, and the final contract must be approved by the commission, the council, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Neighborhood residents, community groups and local businesses will have numerous opportunities to weigh in on the final design. But we believe all those stakeholders will ultimately share our vision for the Greek Theatre as a sacred grove within the city, a place where the rugged nature of Griffith Park provides the perfect backdrop for a vibrant slate of cultural programming.

Our design will expose the theater’s original Greek colonnade to the left and right of the stage…(click here to read RCH’s vision for the Greek Theater).

Next steps – the proposal goes to a City Council committee and then on to the parks commission, City Council and Mayor Garcetti for final approval.

If yo’re not already familiar with Rios Clementi Hale, they are worth getting to know as they are responsible for many of the really beautiful projects being done in and around our City today.
