Speed Hump Applications Open on Wednesday, Sept. 16

Every six months, the city opens a brief window during which neighbors interested in slowing traffic on residential streets can apply for speed humps on their blocks.  The next window will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, September, 16.

But those who want to apply need to be quick – the window closes as soon as the quota for applications  (30 per city council district, or 450 citiwide) is met – which can sometimes be just a couple of minutes after the system opens.  If you don’t get your application in before the quota is filled, you’ll have to wait six months for the next application cycle.

Also, according to LADOT:

“Before applying, please be aware that completing a speed hump request involves multiple steps of engagement and technical review. You should also know that due to LADOT’s limited budget, we can only construct a limited number of speed humps citywide. LADOT prioritizes requests based on technical feasibility and need.”

So while the initial online application process is relatively simple, there are specific requirements for speed hump locations (including the type of street and the average speed of cars on the block), and support of the residents on that block must also be demonstrated. (Ten signatures from property owners on te block are required to submit the initial application, and a more formal survey, to be done within six months of the initial application, must demonstrate 66.7% approval among property owners.)

Applications will not be approved if any of requirements are not met.

    1. Thanks for the heads-up, Keith! Here’s the message on the DOT’s site:

“At this time, this “Cycle 7″ application process has been postponed and will reopen as soon as funding for the program is more certain. In short, this portal to intake requests will NOT be available at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 as previously anticipated.

This is not a decision the Department came to easily, and we understand the timing is difficult. However, we do not want to mislead the public by accepting applications we may not be able to fund construction thereafter. This postponement does not affect previously approved applications, and we will continue to prioritize outstanding applications as funding becomes available. LADOT remains committed to ensuring the continued delivery of essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. For latest updates please visit our website at ladot.lacity.org.”
