As we all know, southern California’s mega-drought isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So the city of Los Angeles has tightened landscape watering rules and renewed its pleas for all residents to save water wherever possible. As of this month, it looks like we’re doing a bit better (our collective water use was down an admirable 9% in June)…but if you’d like a small additional incentive to save water, you can take LA Sanitation‘s water-saving pledge and get a small reward. Just fill out a short questionnaire, choose three ways in which you personally can promise to conserve water, and the city will send you a free tote bag for your effort.
Here are the water-saving activities you can choose from – all small, common-sense steps – and we’re sure that, like us, you’ll probably find well more than three that you’ll find quite simple to stick to:
- Wash only full loads of clothes and dishes
- Fix leaky faucets
- Turn off water while brushing your teeth
- Collecting shower water as it warms up
- Take shorter showers
- Water plants early or late in the day to minimize evaporation
- Planting drought-tolerant native plants
- Sweep sidewalks and hardscape instead of hosing them down
- Get your car washed at professional car washes that recycle water
