The Week Ahead – Events for 5/15-5/21

 

Monday is Tax Day, and there are plenty of events to attend if you’re looking for something to procrastinate finishing up or if you’re celebrating being done with your taxes both in person and online. 

 

Arts & Culture

 

The Music Center has partnered with Dance Magazine to present a conversation between Misty Copeland, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) principal dancer, and South African dancer/choreographer Dada Masilo “about their personal experiences…compar[ing] their schedules and struggles, and the differences in their journeys as Black women in dance in the U.S. versus South Africa.” They’ll also discuss “discrimination and body image issues in dance, as well insights on stage fright and their love for ballet.” 

Chevalier’s book talks this week include Robert Ritchie on Monday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m.  He’ll discuss The Lure of the Beach: A Global History which “demonstrates that whether as a commodified pastoral destination, a site of ecological resplendency, or a flashpoint between private ownership and public access, the history of the beach is a human one that deserves to be told now more than ever before.” And Noah Isenberg, the editor of Billy Wilder On Assignment: Dispatches from Weimar Berlin and Interwar Vienna, will talk about the acclaimed director’s early writings as a freelance reporter, translated into English for the first time on Wednesday, May 19th at 7:00 p.m.

This weekend is also LitFest Pasadena which features livestream panels with authors on subjects ranging from true crime to food to fiction. The event is free – check out the full schedule of events here

On Saturday, May 15th NewFilmmakers Los Angeles’s monthly film festival InFocus: Asian Cinema film festival is “spotlighting and celebrating Asian filmmakers and stories from around the world across two shorts programs featuring work by emerging Asian and Asian-American directors representing ten countries in all, as well as the LA premiere of Christina Antonakos-Wallace’s acclaimed feature documentary From Here, which explores the nuanced complexity of immigration experiences amidst rising nationalism.”

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, celebrated L.A. chefs are collaborating on one-of-a-kind mashup dishes for Pop Off LA from Sunday, May 16th through Sunday, May 23rd with a portion of proceeds going to the non-profit Off Their Plate

FORT:LA‘s May architectural trail is presented in partnership with the City of West Hollywood’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival and takes you to five homes five homes designed by John Elgin Woolf for the Hollywood Regency trail. Woolf “had a major role in creating our idea of Golden Era Hollywood glamour, the homes he designed for movie and television major players set a new standard for luxury.” One notable stop on the tour is the George Cukor Estate, complete with Katherine Hepburn’s Guest House.

If you or your kids were some of the many people in my Instagram feed who took up roller skating over the past year and now are thinking of leveling up, check out the Junior Roller Derby Expo on Saturday, May 15th at 10:30 a.m. at LA Kings Roller Rink in Burbank to “watch some high-level derby featuring our world champion and up-and-coming athletes.” 

 

Local Government

 

Finally, 0n Friday, May 21st at 9:30 a.m. join StreetsLA for its annual Tree Summit, and hear from City Forest Officer Rachel Malarich for “a series of discussions which explore the science behind the need for water to ensure a healthy and vibrant urban forest, projects to capture data on the use of water, and how our communities have been proactive in working with the city family to explore creative solutions for water capture and use.”
