This Sunday is Mother’s Day, and there are plenty of events around town and online you can attend to celebrate with the moms in your life…as well as another museum reopening, art fairs, and more.

Kick off Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9th at 9:00 a.m. with a virtual serenade by the L.A.-based all female mariachi ensemble, the Mariachi Divas, and hosted by Vallarta Supermarket. You can watch live on Facebook LIVE or Instagram IGTV, or catch the rebroadcast on Monday, May 10th.
Another Mother’s Day performance this weekend is the Neo Ensemble Theater’s show “Mom: 2021,” an exploration of motherhood in many different facets, live via Zoom on Saturday, May 8th at 4:00 p.m. And it includes a piece by the Buzz’s own theater writer Laura Foti Cohen. The show is a pay-what-you-can fundraiser, and donors will receive the link to watch.
If you’re vaccinated and ready to head inside a movie theater, the El Capitan has a special treat – during the month of May they’re showing older Disney movies including Toy Story and Lilo & Stitch. Through May 9th, you can see The Little Mermaid.
Another IRL place to check out this week is the Craft Contemporary, which reopens to the public on Sunday, May 9th and features local artists on all three floors. Making Time “celebrates a selection of L.A.-based artists who have shared their artwork in solo exhibitions at Craft Contemporary over the last ten years.” In Tomoshibi: Glass Works by Kazuki Takizawa, “Los Angeles-based artist Kazuki Takizawa uses glass’s dual ability to be transparent and opaque, durable and fragile, as a metaphor for living with bipolar disorder and to destigmatize mental illness,” and Cathy Cooper: Dramatis Personae “presents a new series of works that oscillate between sculpture and costume” from Los Angeles-based artist, performer, and costume designer Cathy Cooper.
You can also get a gift for Mother’s Day, and support more local artists, at Barnsdall Park’s Virtual Art Fair, which runs from now through Saturday, July 31 and “showcases diverse work from adult Barnsdall students and teachers, and many other artists, including handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, fiber arts, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, mixed media, prints and cards.”

May is AAPI Heritage Month, and you can learn more about some of our local Asian American and Pacific Islander history through an online exhibition through the Los Angeles Public Library: “Stories and Voices from L.A. Chinatown.” This is the first in the series Archive Alive, “a new collaboration between The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens; the Library Foundation of Los Angeles; and the Los Angeles Public Library” that aims to peel back the layers of Chinatown’s history: “from the leaders who envisioned and created a New Chinatown in 1938–after the demolition of Old Chinatown to make way for Union Station–to the entrepreneurs and small business owners who earn their livelihood here today, to the generations of families that have called this neighborhood home, there are countless stories of vision and opportunity, tradition and community, exclusion and resilience.”
For more local history, the Windsor Square Hancock Park Historical Society will be hosting an online event: Judson: Innovation in Stained Glass on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. Judson Studios was founded in downtown Los Angeles in 1897 and is the oldest family-run stained glass studio in America. The current head of the studio, David Judson, will break down “the history of the studio and some sincerely beautiful pieces of stained glass art.”
On Saturday, May 15th, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., join the the Natural History Museum, for Bug Fair Connected: featuring “local stories from our own L.A. backyard” which “show off the most unique specimens in our collection, highlight entomologists from all over the globe and more.”
Local Government
The Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council’s General Board Meeting is on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.
And the Mid-City West Community Council‘s monthly board meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 11, starting at 6:30 p.m., and will include a presentation on the local homeless count conducted by the council in the absence of a city census this year.
