The Week Ahead – Events for April 3-9, 2021

 

It’s Easter Weekend, and there’s lots to do whether or not you celebrate! This week truly has the range, from sweet treats and activities for kids to another of the GWNC’s Civics 101 series, this time with Congressman Jimmy Gomez. Truly something for everyone!

Arts & Culture

 

A new episode of the LA Phil’s online Sound/Stage series drops on Sunday, April 4th: Easter Sunrise at the Hollywood Bowl. Watch Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic with gospel singers Mary Mary and soprano Nadine Sierra as you start your Easter Sunday.

For more music, you can always tune into the Japan Foundation of Los AngelesMusic Mondays. The theme for the month of April is Harmony, and on Monday, April 5th at 6:00 p.m., watch  Noriaki Mita (Gagaku) who’ll be performing live from Japan. 

Larchmont’s own Chevalier’s Books always has a smorgasbord of events, but this week they’re hosting several childrens’ authors, including Renée Felice Smith and Chris Gabriel, authors of Hugo and the Impossible Thing, about a brave little dog named Hugo, on Saturday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m., Alyssa Colman, author of The Gilded Girl, about two girls learning the secrets of magic, on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m., and Max Braillier, author of The Last Kids on Earth: Thrilling Tales from the Tree House, on Thursday, April 8th at 7:00 p.m. Chevalier’s also welcomes author Morgan Jerkins on Wednesday, April 7th at 6:00 p.m., to discuss her new novel Caul Baby with Rachel Cargle & Tyrese Coleman.

 

Community & History

 

The Original Farmers Market once again has partnered with Cedars Sinai for a blood drive through Saturday, April 3rd at 4:00 p.m. and all donors will receive a free COVID-19 antibody test and a free OJ from Rick’s Produce. Schedule an appointment here: www.donatebloodcedars.org, and while you’re at the Farmer’s Market, pick up all your Easter food and treats. 

Even more treats can be found at Grand Central Market, which is hosting an online bake sale through Sunday, April 4th raising money to support the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Purchase a pastry box online from Republique, The Donut Man, Fat & Flour, and many more, and pick up curbside between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. this weekend. 

Another beloved museum has reopened for in-person visitors! The Autry has released additional tickets for afternoons from Tuesday, April 6th through Sunday, April 11th, and for full days Tuesday, April 13th through Sunday, April 11th.  Masters of the American West® Art Exhibition and Sale and When I Remember I See Red: American Indian Art and Activism in California are currently on view.

For some local history from the comfort of your house, join Esotouric’s weekly webinar John Fante’s Bunker Hill and Downtown Los Angeles Literary Time Machine Webinar on Sautrday, April 3rd at 12:00 p.m. “for a celebration of the great L.A. novelist John Fante, and the historic neighborhoods and offbeat characters that inspired him.” Speakers include the author’s children Vickie Fante Cohen and Jim Fante, Pershing Square public artist Barbara McCarren, Fante scholar Matteo Cacco and Bunker Hill native son Gordon Pattison.

 

Local Government

 

The Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council Outreach Committee meets Saturday, April 3rd at 9:30 a.m. and its Sustainability Committee meets on Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. 

The GWNC is also hosting another installment of its Civics 101 Town Hall Series – this time with Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-34).  Tune in to “Your Federal Government 101” on Monday, April 5th at 6:30 p.m. and the Congressman will break down what his job actually entails day to day, how members of Congress can help their constituents, and take your questions.
