The Week Ahead – Events for June 11-17, 2022

This year’s theme is #LoveYourPride, so come on out to this weekend’s festivities and show us your pride!

June is Pride Month and the festivities will be in full swing this weekend when LA Pride takes over the streets of Hollywood! Come out and celebrate the freedom that being your authentic self can bring, while having the best time of your life. Hit up Pride in the Park, the Pride Parade, and this year’s newest addition, Pride Village. A Judy Garland exhibit is also taking place at The Ebell of Los Angeles, and Chevalier’s Books will be hosting a LGTBQIA+ Youth Hang after hours. There will also be an all important Blood Drive happening at the Farmers Market and Jazz at LACMA will finish off the week’s events with an evening full of complex harmonies.

Arts, Culture, and Entertainment

Vintage shopping is one of my favorite pastimes, so it delights me to tell you that the Pickwick Vintage Show is back again this week at ROW DTLA this Saturday, June 11. Sort through an abundant mix of vintage treasures from close to 50 vendors, including clothing, jewelry, accessories, inspiration and more! Doors open at 10 a.m. for early birds ($20), and noon for general admission ($10), and will be open until 4 p.m. Limited tickets will be available for purchase at the door, so advanced ticket purchase is highly recommended. The next show will be on Saturday, July 9. And when you’re done shopping, why not head over to Suite 120 for an Opening Reception of artist Mark Dean Veca’s Ornamental Illness, Part II on Saturday, June 11 from 5-9 p.m. Enjoy a new suite of screen printed editions, new paintings and sculptures, and other works from his archives. Veca is known for creating paintings, drawings and installations of surreal cartoons, psychedelic landscapes, and pop culture iconography. The exhibit is open now through June 24.

Also, if Saturday’s vintage and bargain shopping isn’t enough, check out the six-family yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, on S. Orange Dr. between 4th and 6th Streets.  The organizers promise lots of great finds including baby and kids’ gear, kids’ bikes, toys, clothing, kitchen items, furniture…and more!

In celebration of what would’ve been her 100th birthday (on June 10), The Ebell of Los Angeles is proud to present a once-in-a-lifetime immersive tribute to the life and career of Judy Garland with Get Happy! 100 Years of Judy Garland, The Exhibit, happening at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12. The exhibit highlights her most beloved and well known role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, through to what many historians consider her pinnacle performance in A Star Is Born. Come see over a dozen of Judy’s costumes, including never before seen garbs from The Wizard of Oz, three sheet movie posters, rare photographs, studio documents and personal letters. Fifteen minute time slots are available from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The cost is free with a suggested donation of $10.

With more than 30 acres of gorgeous green lawn and a capacity for 25,000, LA Pride in the Park at Los Angeles State Historic Park has the potential to be the Best. LA. Pride. Ever. Happening this Saturday, June 11 from 1-11 p.m. Pride in the Park is LA Pride’s festival-style event offering up a full day and night of activities, music, vendors, food, beer gardens, and more! And it keeps getting better…this year’s headliner is none other than Christina Aguilera, leading the “hottest lineup ever,” including Anitta, Syd, Chika, and Golden Globe-winner Michaela Jaé (fka MJ Rodriguez). Tickets range from $75-$300 and are still available, but don’t wait!!

Also, get ready to #LoveYourPride even more, because on Sunday, June 12 the first permitted gay parade in the world, the original and iconic LA Pride Parade is back in Hollywood where it all began in June of 1970! Come out and join in the cheer, with over 130 parade floats, marchers, trucks, exotic cars, twirlers, performers, and more! This year’s Grand Marshals are Sir Lady Java (Community), Mark Indelicato (Celebrity), and the one and only Paula Abdul (Icon). The parade route starts at Hollywood and Cahuenga at 10:30 a.m., goes west to Highland, and ends at Sunset and Cahuenga. And if you didn’t already know, parking in Hollywood can be tricky, so public transportation or ride sharing is highly recommended.

And after the parade, head over to Pride Village, a new neighborhood festival organized by The Hollywood Partnership in collaboration with LA Pride, located on Hollywood between Cahuenga and Vine. Sponsor tents will be on the section of Hollywood between Ivar and Vine, near the Ferris wheel, community stage and vendor booths. And, yes, you read that right! It says Ferris wheel! Learn more about the weekend’s festivities with the Hollywood Pride Guide.

As you’ve already realized it’s Pride month, and in honor of such Chevalier’s Books will host an in-store book talk on Monday, June 13 with Annie Krabbenschmidt, who will discuss their memoir/essay collection/queer text, FRED: An Unbecoming Woman from 7-8 p.m. “More autotheory than memoir, Fred deconstructs the institution of “womanhood,” defying gender and genre.” Please note that masks will be required. Then, on Tuesday, June 14, Chevalier’s will play host again for an After Hours LGTBQIA+ Youth Hang with Board Games and Books from 6-7 p.m. And the week will wrap up with a virtual event on Wednesday, June 15 at 6 p.m., when Ken Waissman & Tom Moore discuss GREASE, Tell Me More, Tell Me More! Stories from the Broadway Phenomenon that Started it All. Purchase a copy of the book here. Moore and Waissman, respectively, directed and produced the original Broadway production, along with eight national tours, and two London productions in the West End.

So much good stuff is coming out of LACMA this week it’s hard to fit it all in! A selection of films from the dawn of cinema will be playing at the Academy Museum on Saturday, June 11, kids summer art classes begin on Monday, June 13, and The Vanishing Point storytelling event will be happening on Wednesday, June 15. Presented in conjunction with LA Arts and Health Week as part of Healing Arts global outreach, The Vanishing Point tells the story of Christopher Bailey’s journey into blindness, and what he learned about “perception, empathy, and the healing power of the arts”. Introduced by the world renowned soprano and Arts and Health advocate Renee Fleming, the performance will be followed by a discussion with the audience. And don’t forget the museum’s weekly Jazz at LACMA series, presenting the Bob Reynolds Quartet on Friday, June 17. Seating is limited and first come, first served. Masks are still required in all indoor areas. Click here to view LACMA’s full calendar of events.
