The Week Ahead – Events for March 5-11, 2022

The Amy Winehouse tribute band, Dear Amy, will be performing at The Bourbon Room in Hollywood on Tuesday, March 8.

Music, Marionettes, and Matinees (oh my!) are just a few of the happenings around town this week. Enjoy yet another super cool event at Craft Contemporary in the form of a blacksmithing demonstration, and then head over to The Bourbon Room to catch an Amy Winehouse tribute band. There’s also a multitudinous number of performances on the calendar for the Walt Disney Concert Hall, including a tribute to living jazz legend Wayne Shorter.

Arts, Culture, and Entertainment

Craft Contemporary has a very cool Blacksmithing Demonstration going on this Sunday, March 6 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Meet the folks from Adam’s Forge as they present Forged in Fire, a free blacksmithing exhibition in the museum’s courtyard. Learn about this historic craft process and witness the transformation of wrought iron through heat and hammering. Be sure to stay tuned for more collaborations between Craft Contemporary and Adam’s Forge! This event is free with no need to RSVP.

The Hollywood Legion Theater welcomes back Family Sunday Matinees to their indoor theater this Sunday, March 6 with a screening of Space Jam at 2 p.m. In a desperate attempt to win a basketball match and earn their freedom, the Looney Tunes characters seek the aid of retired basketball champion, Michael Jordan! Tickets are only $10, so round up the kids and make your way over to this historic theater for some family fun time.

A multitudinous amount of cool stuff is happening at the Walt Disney Concert Hall this week, and it all begins on Sunday, March 6 with the American Youth Symphony: Sounds About Town, featuring Grammy-nominated violinist Tessa Lark. Performances to follow later in week include Jay Campbell + iggi figgis-vizueta on Tuesday, March 9, a tribute to living jazz legend Wayne Shorter on Wednesday, March 10, and songwriter Andy Shauf with Haley Heynderickx will round things out on Friday, March 11. Ticket prices vary; click here to view the calendar.

Next, step inside “a world where imagination dwells” at Chevalier’s Books when puppeteer Alex Evans discusses the book Enchanted Strings: Bob Baker’s Marionette Theater in-store on Monday, March 7 at 7 p.m. The Bob Baker Marionette Theater has enchanted families in Los Angeles and beyond with marionette performances since 1963. Enchanted Strings tracks the visual history from Bob Baker’s earliest days to the theater’s transformation into a thriving hub of creative culture. Click here to RSVP. And on Thursday, March 10, make your way back to Chevalier’s to hear an inspiring story of a self-made woman, Breaking the Mold, by Blanca Blanco. Pre-order a signed copy of the book here.

This next one I have a personal connection to, since I once dressed up as Amy Winehouse for Halloween. Come witness Dear Amy, an Amy Winehouse tribute band, bring the songstress back to life on Tuesday, March 8 at The Bourbon Room in Hollywood. The show has been described as performance art, not just a typical tribute. Come see for yourself what many have called the next best thing to seeing Amy herself. The act features a 9-piece band, full Winehouse wardrobe, and Jewish Cockney accent to boot! Tickets range from $39-$499. The Bourbon Room is located on Hollywood Blvd between Cahuenga and Vine.

Lastly, for A, C, and E, LACMA’s I Am… film series is going strong with a special online screening of Summertime on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. A conversation with Get Lit Words Ignite poets will follow the screening. The film, which is part contemporary musical and part sociological art, follows the intersecting stories of 27 youth spoken-word poets over a single day in Los Angeles. This series of films by award-winning and emerging Latin American and BIPOC filmmakers aims to celebrate cultural diversity and emerging filmmakers. The event is free, but an RSVP is required. There are lots of other great things happening at LACMA this week, too – click here to view the calendar.
