The Week Ahead – Events for November 6-12, 2021

Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall exhibition will be opening at the Natural History Museum this Sunday, November 7.

With a full month of Halloween activities and events behind us, and until the holidays are upon us again, we should all try to enjoy a more relaxed, breezy fall state of mind. This week is a bit slow as far as local events go, but there are still some compelling options to get you out of the house or immersed in a captivating webinar. The LA Marathon is also happening this Sunday, so you might want to avoid certain areas of the city that are detailed below.

Arts & Culture

Some movies are just meant to be seen on the big screen, including Marvel’s latest epic hero flick, Eternals, which will be playing at the El Capitan Theatre from November 5-21. Eternals follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who had protected Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long though lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again. Tickets prices and showtimes vary. Bonus: 10 costumes from the movie will be on display in the lobby. Proof of full vaccination is now required.

If Marvel movies aren’t your thing, head over to ROW DTLA instead for a free outdoor concert on Saturday, November 6 from 3:30-5 p.m.  Enjoy a lovely SoCal fall afternoon at ROW’s famed Alameda Square Tree and be treated to the sounds of pianist, classical improviser, and Young Steinway Artist George Ko, who will play a setlist of originals, film and anime covers, and requests from the audience. Steinway & Sons has kindly provided its 9-foot concert grand for the afternoon.

LACMA has a full calendar of events this week, including in-person event, In Conversation: Amy Sherald and Elaine Welteroth on Sunday, November 7 from 6-7 p.m. In celebration of The Obama Portraits Tour and Black American Portraits, LACMA will be hosting artist Amy Sherald and journalist, author, TV host, and Cultural Ambassador for Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote initiative, Elaine Welteroth. The two will discuss how art can enable the exploration of self and community, and how Sherald’s unique style of creating portraits, including her groundbreaking portrait of Michelle Obama (right), has expanded the tradition of portraiture. This is a free event, but an RSVP is required. Ticket holders will have access to the galleries from 7–8 pm. Entry is first come, first served, so be sure to arrive early.

On the Boulevard, Chevalier’s Books has two in-store events going on mid-week, starting with Huma Abedin’s Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds on Wednesday, November 10 at 7 p.m. In her memoir, Hilary Clinton’s former aide and longtime advisor talks about family, identity, legacy, faith, marriage, motherhood and work. Abedin is the daughter of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals and advocates, who grew up in the United States and Saudi Arabia and traveled extensively. Pre-order a signed copy of the book here, and don’t forget to RSVP.

And on the following day, Thursday, November 11 at 7 p.m., award-winning book critic and bestselling author Charles Finch will be in-store at Chevalier’s discussing What Just Happened: Notes on a Long YearIn his book about the never-ending year of 2020, Finch offers commentary with “unwavering humanity and light-footed humor” on the pandemic, protests for racial justice, the presidential election, and more. Preorder a signed copy of the book here, and don’t forget to RSVP.
