The Week Ahead – Events for October 15-21, 2022

Come support Alexandria House and all the important work it does at its fabulous fundraising event this Saturday, Oct. 15.

Fundraisers, food, and opera, oh my! Put your charity hats on this week and dust off those checkbooks, my friends, because it is the time of giving and you can get your fill by attending or donating to many a worthy cause that you can read about below. Fill your belly with deliciously discounted fare during Dine LA Week, which is actually 2 weeks, and catch an opera performance at The Ebell. There are, of course, holiday happenings as well, a candidate forum to get you up to speed before November’s election (can you believe it’s only one month away?!), and the 100th anniversary celebration of Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre. Man, how time flies.

Fundraisers, Food, and Opera

This Saturday, October 15, you (the art-loving public) are invited to the annual Craft Contemporary Gala and Fundraising Event, taking place from 6-9 p.m. This year’s honorees include artists Keiko Fukazawa and Dennis Callwood, along with architect and trustee Joe Coriaty, for their “unique cultural contributions.” Celebrate Craft’s brilliant community of artists and neighbors while you enjoy delicious food, complimentary cocktails and beverages, and live DJ music. The CC Gala will also feature a silent auction promoting a diverse collection of artworks and experiences from some of LA’s most respected craft artists. Guests at this year’s Gala will also be among the first to see the museum’s recently installed fall shows. As with all galas, tickets don’t come cheap but they’re usually worth it; cost starts at $250 for an individual ticket and up to $10,000 for Platinum Patron status. Purchase tickets here. All proceeds benefit the museum’s exhibitions and educational programs.

Also please join your fellow philanthropists for Alexandria House’s annual Casino Night this Saturday, October 15 at 7 p.m. at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, to celebrate, have fun and raise money for the crucial work of Alexandria House. This year AH is honoring its “really big deal” – Caroline Fitzgerald, the non-profit’s dedicated Board Chair and supporter for more than 20 years. Tickets are $95 and include “hearty” appetizers, $50 in gaming chips, one free drink ticket, silent auction and raffle, photo booth and much more! Sponsorships are still available and you can also purchase an ad in a tribute book to salute Caroline, Alexandria House, or to share your personalized message/business ad to other supporters. Since 1996, AH has provided safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelters to economic stability and permanent housing. So come show off your poker face, while supporting this wonderful organization!

And on Sunday, October 16, the Wilshire Crest Elementary School PTA will be doing its fundraising via a booth at the long-running Melrose Trading Post flea market at Fairfax High School, selling gently used kids’ clothes, toys, puzzles, games, and even a few Halloween costumes! Great bargains on kids’ stuff, and a great cause – all proceeds will be used to fund field trips for Wilshire Crest’s Pre-K through 5th Grade students. The Melrose Trading Post is a program of Greenway Arts Alliance, a community-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite communities through art, education and enterprise. The MTP is open every Sunday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

AALAO Michael Melton Memorial Fall Recital with Soprano Ashley Fabian

And here’s that opera I mentioned; The Ebell of Los Angeles will host African Americans for LA Opera’s (AALAO) fall recital on Sunday, October 16, featuring lyric soprano Ashley Fabian (praised for her “silvery tone and smooth legato”) performing alongside pianist Lucas Nogara, in memory of late AALAO Chairperson, Michael Melton. A light reception will follow. The AALAO is a chapter of the Opera League dedicated to increasing the awareness of opera throughout the Los Angeles area and to providing a center for African American opera lovers in Los Angeles. The performance will begin at 12 noon and the reception at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance via the Opera League website and $35 at the door.

As previously noted, it’s gala season, people, and the Holocaust Museum LA will be hosting its 14th Annual Gala this coming Thursday, October 20 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Join the museum as it honors Holocaust survivors and their descendants, and presents its inaugural Social Impact Storytelling Award to filmmakers Mike Medavoy, Eric Esrailian, and Terry George. There will also be a special conversation with the recipients about how their film The Promise, along with their tireless activism, led to the Armenian Genocide being formally recognized by the U.S. government. “Educating people about the continued social relevance of the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust are critical to empowering the next generation to speak out against hate.” Proceeds will support free Holocaust education to help eradicate hatred, bigotry, and antisemitism. The Cocktail Reception will begin at 5 p.m.; program at 6:30 p.m. For sponsorships and tickets click here

History and Halloween

Mr. Jack O' Lanterns PumpkinsIt’s beginning to look a lot like Hall-o-ween everywhere you go, and the OG Farmers Market on 3rd and Fairfax is no exception. On Saturday, October 15, Mr. Jack O’ Lanterns Pumpkin Patch will return in all its glory with a cornucopia of fall family fun for you and yours. Grab the fam and come on down to Mr. Jack’s patch to find a large variety of pumpkins ranging from cute jack-be-little pumpkins to the “plumpest” pumpkins and gourds around, perfect for decorating or carving at home (or so they say). A variety of kid-friendly activities and crafts, like pumpkin bowling and pumpkin decorating (and maybe some farm animals, too) will be available daily from October 15-31. The patch is open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Get your Halloween Yoga Storytime pants on, folks, because this special free event is coming to Larchmont Village this Saturday, October 16, when Chevalier’s Books plays hostess to local children’s author and yogi Teresa Power, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Participants will get a chance to meet the author, listen to a reading of her new book, Halloween Yoga, and learn yoga poses made especially for the spooky season. Costumes are welcome and no registration is required, just come on by! Power is the award-winning author of The ABCs of Yoga for Kids and the Little Mouse Adventures series, and founder of International Kids’ Yoga Day. Her mission is to share strategies and tips to help children, parents, and educators enrich their lives and manage stress. Check out Chevalier’s Calendar for its full schedule of events.

If you like toasting stuff (other than bread), then come on down to toast the Miracle Mile and Carthay Circle Neighborhoods’ 100th Anniversary on Sunday, October 16 from 4-7 p.m. MM and CC will celebrate their mutual centennial milestone at our local Irish pub and designated historic cultural monument, Tom Bergin’s. Enjoy happy hour with your friends and neighbors, while you reminisce about the good old days and have a devilish good time. The event has a no-host bar and menu and will take place outdoors. Vintage ’20s and ’30s attire is admired, but not required, but why not think of it as early Halloween? Enjoy nostalgia and music of the founding era as well! Shenanigans are encouraged.

Harlow in HollywoodTwo heavyweights of history and good times, the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Heritage Museum to be exact, will come together this Sunday, October 16 to present Harlow in Hollywood: The Blonde Bombshell in the Glamour Capital, 1928-1937. The story of “how Hollywood shaped a myth and determined a young woman’s reality. A town, a remarkable town, became the backdrop for one of Hollywood’s most incredible stories, a life rife with glamour, pleasure, power, and–in the end–utter sorrow. Her story lives in the pages and breathtaking pictures of Harlow in Hollywood.” The day will feature a presentation and book signing by author Darrell Rooney, Harlow artifacts on display, and special guest, Cora Sue Collins, who will be reminiscing about her time spent with the one and only Jean Harlow. Bonus: Hollywood Heritage and Art Deco Society members get a 10% discount in the museum store. Tickets are $10-$20 and parking is free! The party starts at 2 p.m. at the Hollywood Heritage Museum.

And for your last history lesson of the week, join the fine folks at Hollywood Heritage for yet another celebration of Tinseltown, with the 100th anniversary of opening night at Sid Grauman’s Hollywood Egyptian Theatre on Wednesday, October 19. The Egyptian is still under renovation, but Hollywood Heritage has created a special exhibit celebrating this milestone at its Museum, with artifacts from the original 1922 theatre (the first of its kind on Hollywood Blvd). The extensive exhibit will include items from the Hollywood Heritage collection, as well as material from other collectors from 1922 to the end of the MGM roadshow period. The exhibit will also highlight the pioneers who contributed to the success of Grauman’s Hollywood theatres. The event will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. Tickets are $10.
