The Week Ahead – Events for September 5-11, 2020

Temperatures are at record-breaking heights this week, so here is a selection of activities that will keep you indoors as much as possible (along with a few evening outdoor activities like movie screenings to get you out of the house for a bit).  We also have one event featuring everyone’s favorite heatwave beverage: the margarita.

Community & History

As we prepare to celebrate Labor Day with hamburgers and dips in the pool (if we’re lucky), we can also use the week to remember the history of Labor Day and the hard won fights for workers’ rights that got us the day off in the first place. One event happening on Tuesday, September 8th, 4:00 p.m. asks us to think about how essential workers are treated in this moment with “Racism is a Public Health Issue—Essentially Forgotten: How COVID-19 Impacts Frontline Workers” presented by LACMA, Arte Américas, For Freedoms, GYOPO and StopDiscriminAsian. This is the third event in a series of conversations about racism and public health, and panelists will include civil rights activist and labor rights leader Dolores Huerta, artist Narsiso Martinez, Jess Morales Rocketto, Civic Engagement Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance and Executive Director of Care in Action, and Gabby Seay, Political Director for 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. The Zoom event is free, but RSVP is required.

On Labor Day Eve, Sunday, September 6th at 5:00 p.m., you can also join the National Domestic Workers Alliance for a live-streamed tribute to essential workers, where you can “watch performances, hear stories, and honor the lives of working people who continue to sacrifice daily for our nation’s safety and wellbeing.” Register for the event here.

Speaking of essential work, the The Original Farmers Market has partnered with Cedars Sinai Hospital to host a blood drive today –Saturday, September 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The staff from Cedars Sinai has protocols to ensure “100% safety for all donors, including an outdoor health screening and regular cleaning and disinfecting of equipment. Cedars Sinai will provide free COVID-19 antibody tests for all donors as well.” As a reward for donating blood, you’ll receive a treat from Kaylin & Hobbs, one of the Market’s new merchants specializing in artisan pickles. Spaces are limited, and you must sign up in advance. If you’re experiencing a pickle craving but are less interested in donating blood, you can still participate in Kaylin & Hobbs’ weekend Pickle Pop-Up in the Market Plaza From Saturday through Monday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They’ll be offering free pickle samples with “New York taste” and “West Coast vibes.” And they’ll be the official “side pickle” provider for all of the classic sandwiches at Magee’s Kitchen.

In the non-pickle food category, you can take part in The L.A. Times’ new dinner series on Saturday, Sept. 5th  6:30 p.m.  The series “brings curated menus and online gatherings to Angelenos at home.” Chefs Jon Yao of Kato and Mei Lin of Nightshade design a dinner that “brings the Taiwanese and Chinese influences of their respective restaurants together for a one-time-only takeout meal” plus a livestreamed conversation between the chefs hosted by Lucas Kwan Peterson of the L.A. Times’ Food section. Tickets are $175.

And to completely eschew food in favor of drinks (for those of you over 21), join HomeState‘s annual Margarita Showdown on Saturday, September 5th at 2:00 p.m. This year the competition will be livestreamed, but you can taste along with everyone else by pre-ordering your margarita flights for $50 (with the proceeds going to No Us Without You! and Watts Empowerment Center)  and pick them up at the restaurant’s Highland Park location beforehand. Comedian Cristela Alonzo will host, and Spoon, Chicano Batman, Questlove, Local Natives and Fred Armisen will perform.

Arts & Culture

If you’re missing the energy of a live comedy show, watch comedians Lauren Lapkus and Paul F. Tompkins’ September Babies, a two-person improv livestreaming on Monday, September 7th at 5:00 p.m. The show is organized by Dynasty Typewriter and tickets are $5-10.

Cinecon, the film festival which brings “the rare and unusual films of the silent and early sound era” to the masses is underway now through Saturday, September 5th with programming starting at 3:00 p.m. All the films are free to stream, and some of Saturday’s selections include Loraine of the Lions (1925) and The Bond of Blood (1920).

For those of you more in the mood for a talkie, as is becoming more and moe common, there is a whole smorgasbord of drive-in and outdoor movies happening all over the city, including on the roof of The Montalbán.
