You can start your Saturday clean-up chores bright and early this weekend, by taking any bulky items you want to get rid of to one of the City’s periodic free bulky item drop-off events. From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., five Department of Sanitation locations will be accepting furniture, carpet, yard trimmings, shelving, and wood. For more information and the full list of participating CitySan locations, see the flier, call 1-800-773-2489, or go to http://www.lacitysan.org/bulky. The two locations closest to us will be 2027 Stoner Avenue, in West LA…and 2201 E. Washington Boulevard, near downtown.
Next, after clearing out some space in your house, you can start to fill it up again at a big estate sale at 347 N. Lucerne . The sale actually starts today (Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.), and also runs Saturday 10-3, and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The organizers describe the property as a “hidden house of delights” with a “lush, diminutive free-form garden.” Items for sale include antique furniture and lamps (many European and Asian imports), vintage wrought iron patio furniture, original art by noted artists, vintage Japanese and Mexican decorative items, a California pottery collection, Art Deco chrome pieces, Batchelder tile items, antique Chinese framed embroideries, Mexican tapestry, name-brand crystal, china and glassware, rugs, books, linens, women’s clothing, and much more.
Next, at 1:00 p.m., head over to the John C. Fremont Library, 6121 Melrose Ave., for a chance to practice your French in casual conversation with native Parisian Samba Magassa and other friendly Francophiles. The session is free, and no registration is required, just stop in…and start talking.
An hour later, starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, you can keep the continental spirit going with a visit to Larchmont’s outpost of Parisian boutique Diptyque, which is offering a Bazaar Days event to explore and promote the items in its “34 Collection” of exceptional objects. Visitors can immerse themselves in the story of the original boutique, and create their own inspired potpourri. They’re also offering a 10ml fragrance & 35g candle with any $150 purchase, while supplies last.
Saturday evening looks quiet in the neighborhood this weekend, but on Sunday, families can enjoy the Bob Baker Marionette Theater’s Traveling Show, starting at 11 a.m. at the Miracle Mile Toy Hall, 5464 Wilshire Blvd. As always, there will also be a special meet-and-greet with the puppets after the show. And finally on Sunday, for those in a slightly spookier mood, you can head downtown to the Los Angeles Central Library, for “Haunted by History: Separating the Facts and Urban Legends of Eight Well-known Historic Southern California Hotels and Inns.” The presentation is by author/researcher Craig Owens (of Bizarre Los Angeles), who spent six years dissecting the history of eight historic (and haunted) Southern California hotels and inns in order to separate fact from urban legend. He also tested each of the hotel’s paranormal claims by staging beautiful photographs inside its most haunted areas. Owens will provide stories and legends from his “Haunted by History” book, which covers the Hotel del Coronado, Victorian Rose Bed & Breakfast, Julian Gold Rush Hotel, Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Alexandria Hotel, Pierpont Inn, Banning House Lodge and Glen Tavern Inn. The event starts at 2 p.m. There is no charge and seating is first come, first serve. Doors open approximately 15 minutes before the start of the program.
