So much to do…so little weekend.  Definitely true this week…and there’s something for everyone, too:

mummies2If you’d like to get a jump on things, the Natural History Museum’s new Mummies: Secrets from the Tombs exhibit, which officially opens on Saturday, is holding a special late-night preview tonight, Friday, September 18, from 5 p.m. to midnight.  The event will include live performances, a DJ, craft cocktails, hands-on activities, food trucks and more.  See the link above for more information and tickets.

Windsor Village

On Saturday, September 19, the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council will sponsor a free walking tour of Windsor Village, bounded by Wilshire, Crenshaw, Olympic and Lucerne.  The tour will feature many of the neighborhood’s historic and architectural gems, including the newly refurbished Harold A. Henry Park, the exterior of the Wilshire United Methodist Church (with an exploration of Moorish influences on Spanish Colonial Revival architecture), and an exclusive look at the interior of the beautiful and historic Ebell of Los Angeles.  Participants will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the pergola area of Harold A. Henry Park, 890 S. mmra3At 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, the Miracle Mile Residential Association will host its second Miracle Mile Historical Preservation Overlay Zone [HPOZ] Community Meeting in the ballroom at Candela [aka Leonardo’s], 831 S. La Brea Ave. This outreach event will provide residents – both renters and property owners – with more information about the details of living in an Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (now being pursued by the neighborhood). The meeting will be hosted by Mark Zecca, Chairperson of the Miracle Mile HPOZ Committee. Other speakers on hand to provide information and answer questions include Renata Dragland from the City of Los Angeles Office of Historic Resources; Katie Horak, a Senior Associate with Architectural Resources Group; Robby O’Donnell, a founder of the Wilshire Park HPOZ, and MMRA President James O’Sullivan. Topics will include how the Preservation Plan for the Miracle Mile HPOZ will be developed, how the HPOZ will be administered, and  the approval process for repairs or alterations to properties within the HPOZ. As with a first meeting on this subject last January, this meeting will be video taped and posted on the MMRA Channel on YouTube. For more information, see the Miracle Mile HPOZ website.

carseateven2Also at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (and running until 3:00 p.m.), the National Council of Jewish Women, in partnership with the County of Los Angeles Public Health Injury & Violence Protection Program, Kids are 1st, the California Highway Patrol, Assemblymember Richard Bloom and Los Angeles City Council Member Paul Koretz, will host a Child Carseat Safety Event at the NCJW’s office at 534 N. Fairfax Ave..  The event will include free car seat installation assistance, car seat safety inspections, free ID kits with fingerprints and photos, and a free car seat raffle at 1:00 p.m.  For more information contact Stephanie Cohen at (310) 450-0041 or [email protected].  Advance reservations for car seat inspections are highly recommended.

bark2Later, at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, you can join BARK for a Reading to Dogs event at the John C. Fremont Library, 6121 Melrose Ave. BARK is an all-volunteer program that encourages children to increase their reading skills and self-confidence by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Studies show that reading to therapy dogs actually leads to improvement in reading skills. mole2Or, if you prefer to food to dogs, try a mole making workshop at Wilshire Branch Library at 2:00 p.m. James Beard award-winning Guelaguetza restaurant will explain the history of mole, display ingredients and provide a quick demonstration of seed grinding and past-making using a metate andmolcajete.  All ages are welcome, and families will leave with a portion of mole paste from the restaurant. sundowntosummer2Finally on Saturday, you can celebrate the end of summer at the Sundown to Summer Festival in the vacant Rotary Club (Christmas tree) lot on North Larchmont Blvd.  There will be musical performances by Matt Costa, The Tulips, Purple Mountain Majesties and We are the West…with food provided by the My Cocina and Chef Monique food trucks, Kazumi Tsujo: Benten Bowl…and comedy and wine tasting with The California Wine Guy.  Food, wine and drinks begin at 2 p.m.; music begins at 4 p.m.  Proceeds from the festival will go to the Wilshire Rotary Foundation, which funds international Rotary club and district projects to improve the quality of life and provide health care, clean water, food, education and other essential needs in the developing world.  Additional sponsors include iLA, Devall Design Home, The Larchmont Boulevard Association, Peet’s Coffee, Goorin Bros, State Farm Insurance, and Hancock Homes Realty. booksnbrunch2Moving on to Sunday, September 20, start with the third annual Big Sunday Books and Brunch event at the Big Sunday office at 6111 Melrose Blvd.  The Big Sunday organization, which matches volunteers with organizations in need of their services, is collecting gently used books for donations to schools and other grateful non-profit organizations.   Starting at 10:00 a.m. volunteers will sort and box the books, and then enjoy a delicious and friendly brunch.  For more information or to RSVP, see http://calendar.bigsunday.org/calendar/books-n-brunch/?instance_id=130207 or contact Rob at [email protected] or (323) 549-9944.  If you would like to donate books, you can drop them off at the same location before Sunday.

lapdopenhouse2And finally, the annual LAPD Wilshire/West Traffic Division Open House, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. at the Wilshire Community Police Station, 4861 W.
