Wilshire at Fairfax: New Look

Metro’s rendering of proposed Purple Line station at Fairfax, next to Johnie’s

Last week Metro released drawings for first-phase subway stations along Wilshire Bl. showing the stop at Fairfax to be placed just west of long-shuttered Johnie’s Coffee Shop where a parking lot now stands. While many Angelenos were hoping the Fairfax stop could be put inside the historic May Co. building (soon to be converted into the new Motion Picture Museum) the estimated price tag came to somewhere between $8-30 million more than squeezing it in between the classic Johnie’s coffeeshop and the 99 Cent store. This could lend to a nice open-air plaza feeling near the corner, and hopefully direct more attention to doing something with the Johnie’s building that actually highlights this fine example of 1955 Googie architecture (like how about using it as a coffee shop again?) There is some speculation that the coffee shop may be incorporated into a larger tower.

Metro is holding a Community Meeting tonight, 5-7:30pm, at LACMA West, 5th floor of 5905 Wilshire Bl. where all the news on the westside extension will be covered. Stop in if you have questions or want to look at the plans.

Just across Fairfax, word from The Wrap has it that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is in the midst of fundraising for their venture to open the May Company building as the official “Oscar” museum in approximately 2016. The Academy is expected to announce the architect they have chosen to revive the streamline moderne structure in about two weeks.
