Wilshire Rotary Club Hosts Annual First Responders Appreciation Event Tomorrow

Firefighter Dana Castro, Police Officer Joshua Parker and Lyn Cohen, president of the First-In Fire Foundation, will be among those honored by the Wilshire Rotary Club at their annual First Responders Appreciation Event tomorrow online. All are welcome to attend.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, February 2, 2022,  the Wilshire Rotary Club of Los Angeles will honor our local fire fighters and police officers at its annual First Responders Appreciation event. This year’s event will take place online at 12 noon and all are welcome to join the meeting.

“The annual event is an opportunity for the community to recognize our city’s public safety officials for their exemplary service over the past year,” Wilshire Rotary President Joyce Kleifield told the Buzz. “Our Rotary Club has a long-standing tradition of more than 25 years paying tribute to those individuals who serve the Wilshire area.”

Each year, the departments’ leadership identifies two honorees who provide exceptional and distinguished service. This year’s honorees include LA Fire Department Captain Frank Larez and Firefighter Dana Castro, and LA Police Department Captain Sonia Monico and honoree Police Officer Joshua Parker. In addition, the Club will recognize an individual for her support to our first responders: Lyn Cohen, president of the First-In Fire Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting communities to their local fire stations.

“Our annual recognition and awards event gives us an opportunity to extend our gratitude to these deserving women and men who serve us bravely and are an integral part of our community,” said Kleifield. “This year has been extremely challenging for our police officers and fire fighters with the ongoing pandemic, so it is wonderful to be able to honor them in this small way.”

Historically, the Buzz has  reported on this event when it’s been held in-person at the Ebell of Los Angeles, where members of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s Station 29 and the Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Division are recognized for their community service and dedication to local residents at a special ceremony. However, due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, this year’s event was shifted to an online format.

The Feb. 2 meeting will be held at noon and is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in attending can join by clicking here. We’ll be there! Full disclosure — this writer is a proud member of the Wilshire Rotary Club.
