Residents who serve as volunteer block captains for the Windsor Square Association gathered last week to discuss neighborhood issues at their annual meeting in June and Paul Bilgore’s Windsor Blvd. backyard.
Windsor Square Association (WSA) President Larry Guzin welcomed more than 50 people including Captain David Kowalski (who recently took over LAPD’s Olympic Division), Captain Rolando Solano from Wilshire Division, and Senior Lead Officers David Cordova and Joe Pelayo. Â Jerry Shaw and Terry Seagraves from SSA, which provides local private security, Guy Langham from FilmLA, and Nikki Ezhari from CD4 Councilmember David Ryu’s office also attended.
Caroline Moser and Katie Jones-Badami, who serve as the Block Captains coordinators, thanked everyone for their service to the neighborhood and encouraged captains to find ways to reach out to all their neighbors.
Helen Hartung, chair of the WSA Tree Canopy, reported on the association’s efforts to survey all the street trees in the neighborhood. She noted that many of the trees are stressed from five years of drought. Many have also been infected by Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer, a beetle that  drills into the tree and transmits a fungus. Infected trees have dark stains on their bark. Hartung urged residents to consider deep watering their trees every six week with a soaker hose around the base of the tree. She recommended a very slow watering over six hours, and cautioned everyone to put an orange cone over the hose on the sidewalk to avoid any walkers from tripping on the hose. For those trees that are too damaged to survey, Hartung hopes to develop a list of appropriate replacement trees.
Larry Guzin invited every block captain to spread the word of the Association’s efforts to secure 55 gallon water barrels for residents in case of an emergency. Through the efforts of resident Gary Duffy, the association has secured an arrangement with PrepandSave to deliver and install to each homeowner a 55 gallon barrel that will last five years. The cost for each barrel is $136. The association will have a booth at the Larchmont Family Fair with purchase forms for residents of Windsor Square.
All residents are invited to attend the association’s Annual Town Hall Meeting Thursday, November 17, 2015, at 7 pm at the The Ebell of Los Angeles (743 S. Lucerne Blvd.).  CD4 Council Member David Ryu will be the featured speaker. Contact WSA at www.windsorsquare.org for more information.
