Windsor Square resident Andy Goodman’s interview with Fox 11 News, supporting protests in the neighborhood, went viral earlier this week, reaching more than 8 million viewers.

On Tuesday afternoon, Goodman, his wife Carolyn Ramsay, and their daughter Olivia, saw hundreds of people streaming toward to the Mayor’s residence from their home nearby.

“We decided we’d walk over and get as close as we could. We are still concerned about keeping social distancing, so we decided we didn’t want to get too deep into the crowd,” Goodman told the Buzz this morning.

Goodmand said they got fairly close to the protest site, but stopped between 5th and 6th streets on Irving. After about 30 minutes, since they couldn’t really see what was happening at the house, they decided to head back home. As they were leaving, they passed a reporter from Fox 11 News, who asked if they would agreed to be interviewed.  Only Goodman, a media coach and communications consultant, agreed to do the interview.

” I coach people on dealing with the media for a living, so I thought I better step up,” Goodman joked.

Goodman outlined why he supported the efforts of the protestors – not knowing if the interview was broadcast live, or even if it would air. But within minutes of arriving home shortly after the interview, he started hearing from friends that he’d been on the news. A few minutes later, @unrigLa tweeted a video of the interview being broadcast on television, commenting that “Even Garcetti’s rich white neighbors get it more than he does.” Goodman’s son, Dan, retweeted the post, tagging his dad. That tweet was picked up by @GroundgameLA, which tweeted “Yo @ericgarcetti you should listen to your neighbor more,” propelling the video even further.

So far, over the tweet has had 8 million views and Goodman has received “literally thousands of messages from people all over the world.” As he later posted on Twitter: “I am overwhelmed by all the affirmations for my comments to Fox News during the protest yesterday at the LA Mayor’s residence. bit.ly/3cx7dAV Please accept this as thanks for your kind, warm words, and please know I’m reading every one. Keep fighting the good fight.”

Goodman is gratified at the support but also uncomfortable.

“I feel like I should be listening, not talking,” said Goodman. “My son Dan said to me, ‘at a time when we should be listening to people of color, if we have to hear a white voice, you said the right thing,’ and that helps.”

Goodman thinks that white Americans should be listening and being quiet.

“If we are given a platform, we use it to support the movement,” said Goodman. “Otherwise we should be quiet. This is a time to learn.  Read something like “White Fragility” by Robin D’Angelo, or “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo, or “How To Be An Anti-Racist” by Ibram X. Kendi. Those are on my reading list.” (And, yes, you can buy these at Chevalier’s Books on Larchmont!)

  1. If you’re not running the soundtrack on this – Fox interview with Andy Goodman, @GoodmanCenter – “You have a nation that was built on stolen lands, by slaves, those are the original sins of this country, and we’ve never had a Truth and Reconciliation Commission like South Africa, we’ve never had to really deal with those fundamental sins, and now you have a perfect storm, you have millions of people out of work, people are hungry, people are angry, and then you have the George Floyd incident on top of all the other incidents that have happened in the past few weeks and months and years, and people are fed up, they’re finally saying enough is enough, you know?
