Councilmember LaBonge Seeks Solution for Hauser & 6th Street Intersection

CD4 Councilmember Tom LaBonge introduced a motion Tuesday regarding traffic calming measures in response to several accidents that have occurred at 6th Street & Hauser.

On July 11, 2012 a 74 year-old woman was killed after being hit by a westbound car that careened up onto the sidewalk on the north-west corner of Hauser and 6th Street after being hit by an eastbound car turning left onto Hauser.

The Motion

The Miracle Mile District in Los Angeles houses one of the largest concentrations of people within the City. There have been two recent incidents and one fatality at the intersection of 6th Street and Hauser Boulevard.

This area in the Miracle Mile is known as a pedestrian neighborhood due to the destinations that surround it: the Grove, Farmer’s Market, La Brea Tar Pits and the Los Angeles County Art Museum. It is imperative that the City look assess the current traffic measures to ensure the continued safety of the residents and visitors. Park La Brea Resident’s Association and Management would like to see channelization at this intersection.

I THEREFORE MOVE that the Department of Transportation be requested to report with recommendations for implementing traffic calming measures as well as conducting a channelization study on 6th Street between Fairfax and LaBrea Avenues in order to address the emerging safety issues.

I FURTHER MOVE that the Department of Transportation review the Mid City West Neighborhood Council’s report on traffic calming and bike lanes as part of the process and consider the recommendations in the report back.

The motion is signed by Councilmember LaBonge and seconded by CD 13 Councilmember Eric Garcetti.

__________

Next steps…the motion has been referred to the Transportation Committee. From there Councilmember LaBonge will work to get it on the agenda so it can be heard and eventually be moved to the whole City Council.

  1. Yes, amazing how/why some drive so crazy/fast along that straight stretch like its a speedway. So bizzaro that one accident where car vs car & 1 car ends up hitting/killing a passer-by pedestrian.
