Local organizers Tamela D’Amico of La Strega Entertainment, Inc. and Tim Malachosky, West’s last assistant, won the support of the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council (GWNC) at its meeting last week to designate a stretch of Rossmore Boulevard in Hancock Park between Melrose Avenue and Beverly Blvd. “Mae West Curve.”Â
According to their online petition, D’Amico and Malachosky want the city to erect a brown local landmark sign in honor of the legendary Hollywood actress Mae West, to commemorate the 50 years West resided on Rossmore Avenue in the Ravenswood Apartments. In addition, they note that West was a groundbreaking woman in the history of Hollywood who saved Paramount studios when she started making movies for the company in the 1930s, at the age of 40.
“Mae West is a Hollywood maven often copied for her style and wit and deserves this honor to solidify her place in history as Hollywood’s first blonde bombshell and as well as saving Paramount Pictures from bankruptcy. In short, there probably would not be any Hancock Park to speak of without her contributions to the movie industry that built the neighborhood,” wrote D’Amico and Malachosky.
“Currently, we are still working on community outreach in many areas to prove support for this endeavor to the city,” Tamela D’Amico of La Strega Entertainment, Inc. told the Buzz. “Everyone we speak to has interest so far, but once all is officially approved by appropriate boards and parties within the city, we collectively will have to then work on more outreach to fund the actual sign and an exhibit, in tandem, of costumes and memorabilia belonging to Mae West that Tim Malachosky, Mae West’s last assistant, holds in his possession. Once this sign approval actually goes through, we plan on making an event of this so old fans can be a part of it and new fans may learn more about her. Mae West is a Hollywood maven that deserves to be honored.”
D’Amico and Malachosky invite you to sign the online petition if you support the street designation in honor of West.
