Having the opportunity to hang out with actress Emma Watson and director Sofia Coppola on the streets of LA was not what Marlborough student Georgia Rock expected to be doing this spring, but when the opportunity called she grabbed it. Rock spent four weeks on and off the film set of The Bling Ring a movie about fame-obsessed teenagers who used the internet to stalk celebrities and burgle their homes for high-end booty. The story is based on a real-life string of celebrity burglaries in Los Angeles by a clique of young teens in 2008-09.
“It’s really a story about how far celebrity obsession can go for kids these days,” Rock shared. “ The reason they were stealing the clothes and jewlry is they wanted to wear it! It says a lot about what’s important to kids in society today.”
Rock, a South Van Ness Ave. resident, was the youngest actor in the film’s main ensemble, and plays the little sister of lead Emma Watson’s character. “The audition itself was not too scary” Rock told the Buzz. “I was treating it more like an experience than obsessed with trying to get a role in the film. So when I got the part it was a nice surprise.”
Most of the shooting was done on location in places like Calabasas, Linwood and Beverly Hills. Since she was on set only one day of spring break, Rock had to take the rest of the time off from school at Marlborough where she is an eighth grader. Her teachers were very understanding, gave her assignments and let her make up tests as needed. On the Bling Ring set she had a teacher assigned to her by the production, who worked with her privately three hours each day to keep her on-track with school. She also had her very own mini-trailer assigned to her for the first time.
Rock has been involved in the dance and theater programs at Marlborough, and wasn’t sure how much she wanted to act. But with this Bling Ring experience she now feels quite comfortable on a film set, and has secured an agent and a manager. Seeing herself on the big screen may just seal the deal for the young thespian. She’s in good company – her father Bobby Rock is a film executive, mother Kerry Rock a casting director, and brother Charley Rock a senior at Loyola High School where he just starred in The Drowsy Chaperone. Georgia Rock is sure on a roll and we expect to see much more of her in the future.
