There’s a local team in town we think you should get to know…the Larchmont United Football Club (LUFC). LUFC is a group of 40+ year-old men who met while attending their kids’ AYSO games – a mix of coaches, dads and their friends. They came together a couple of years ago to continue playing soccer as adults rather than channeling their soccer ambitions through their kids.
The guys play in the LA City League on Wednesday nights at Griffith Park and practice very early on Sunday mornings at Liechty Middle School (7th and Union) from 6a-9a.
I spent an early Sunday watching LUFC play and I have to say I was impressed. They are competitive! There are more than enough guys to field two teams – the team that makes up the official LUFC roster that plays in the LA City League; and the practice team, with players ready to work out the official team and challenge for a slot in the future.
LUFC team member Steve Atlee shared the enthusiasm that exists among the players with the Buzz. “It’s amazing that we manage to get so many guys playing soccer at 6a on Sunday mornings,” Atlee said. “That’s a pretty strong indication of how much fun we’re having.”
Larchmont United Football Club recently signed on two sponsors who will help the team as they compete for the league championship – Champagne Roederer and Keller Williams Realty. LUFC has created a very cool logo – perfectly depicting how they all feel after 90 minutes of competition! Between the champagne and the bicycling donkey, the LUFC jerseys are sure to look pretty sharp.
The 2012 Summer/Fall adult soccer league starts Wednesday, July 18th and takes place at the Griffith Park fields. Be sure to check in with the Larchmont Buzz calendar for exact dates, time and locations of matches. The games are typically at 7p or 8:50p and the team gathers at a local haunt afterwards – someplace with good beer and good eats!
